child "not allowed" to ask teacher for help?
My son is in kindergarten, and there was a note home from his teacher that he didn't complete his writing assignment in class, so he had to do it for homework. He had to write 3 sentences about polar bears, using certain sight words.
He was struggling with it, and I helped him through it. I asked him why he didn't ask the teacher for help? He said "we can't, she only checks it, we have to ask Ms Smith (the teacher assistant) for help. But Ms. Smith left the classroom".
So, I wrote a note to the teacher, telling her what he told me. I was nice about it, not confrontational at all, but just mentioned that he did have difficulty doing the work and felt he couldn't ask anyone for help.
Is this the new thing where the teacher assistants do certain things, and the children can only go to them? Just seems weird to me.

Ugh this really upsets me. It is kindergarten. They are advancing the requirements so much that it is incredibly upsetting.

My kids are are a little older ( 2nd and 3rd grade) but even in 1st, they have a period of time they call "do now" it is independent work and if it is not finished they have to finish it for homework. It also has to be done independently. I am surprised they are doing it in K, but really in the long run will help him

This is correct... and its NOT the teachers fault and there is nothing she can do about it. I am a teacher, and whats expected of these children at such a young age is just ridiculous. But yes, they are given a lot of independent work and are expected to complete it as young as kindergarten. If its not finished, then its sent home. The teacher aide is able to "help" very little. NO spelling help at all. The children are all told to sound the words out, listen for the letter sounds, etc.
Good luck

Could it be that it was during a time that the teacher was working with a small group for reading instruction? I am a teacher and when I am doing my reading lessons the children are expected to work independently. They know they are not to interrupt a reading lesson unless it is a true emergency (some is sick, had a bathroom accident etc). That being said, the work that I give them to do is work that they should be able to do independently, a review or previously taught skills for example. I think it is completely unreasonable of a kindergartener to be expected to write three sentences independently.

It could be, I have to find out. She may respond with a note today. I only have what he told me to go by. I am more concerned that he needed help, and didn't receive any.....or didn't feel he ask for help. I will let you all know -- thanks for the replies!

AJ was required to write 3 sentences each day by herself. The point wasn't so much all words were right just the small sight words. She messed up (and still does) a lot of the words but she was learning what the sound of the beginning or end of a word were. No help was provided. I used to have to stay on top of my aunt .. you can NOT give her the answers. I knew it when I'd check her work (even now) and words I KNEW she couldn't spell or the syntax provided wasn't hers. Or she'd cheat and copy. I'd know because of punctuation.
She could ask for help but not like that kind of help. She was expected (and still is) to do it alone. Now the focus is more on punctuation and capitalization along with her 'wall words'. So other words she can slaughter and I have no care in the world. But harp if she doesn't start a sentence with a capital (something she KNOWS better) or misspells a word she's been taught.
