Children & Myspace - Question for parents or those thinking of kids
My husband told me a horrible story this morning about parents of a friend of a teenager creating a myspace account to play a prank on her, resulting in her committing suicide.
The worst part is that there is no crime committed and nothing that will be done to these adults. I have been nauseous all morning from this.
Here is the story
The parents of the deceased girl are now trying to get new laws passed where there would be some responsibility for this in the future.
My question to the parents, or anyone else, is what do you do now to monitor your children's activities on the Internet? Is anyone using key-loggers? It seems like an invasion of the child's privacy, but still...And they need to be on the computer for their schoolwork I am sure...The parents of this girl had each computer in the house password protected and still this happened.
I guess I am just looking to see what kind of planning people are doing for this...
I am not a mom yet but this story has really shaken me. I hadn't heard about it anywhere until my husband told me about it so forgive me if this has been posted already.

It was neighbors who did it. They were trying to see if the girl was talking about their daughter. If I was the dead girls parents I would file a wrongful death suit. That is horrible

Re: Children & Myspace - Question for parents or those thinking of kids
A law against rumors and picking on people? Half the kids in school would be in jail. It's extremely sad, but that happens every day in every school in the country.
Right now, DS is too young to have meeting type pages (myspace, facebook, etc), so he is never on the PC without DW or myself right next to him. Very soon, we'll get some really good monitoring software, since I know he'll be on the computer a lot. He's already very proficient at Google and surfing.
We'll also talk to him (and DD when she gets a bit older) off-line about everything, including what is going on on-line, and what is going on off-line. Communication on a regular basis is very important with kids.
