need help fast, name change question
I have been married FIVE years, but I am finally going to SS to change my name today because I lost my drivers license & I figured before I request a new one I should change my name. Anyway, I'd like to hyphenate my name-just having a marriage license allows you to do that right? Do I need anything else?

All you need is your marriage license.

It has to be hyphenated on the marriage cert, I believe. I had to tell the woman at townhall that I wanted it hyphenated when I got my license.
I wouldn't think you'd be able to show up and pick a "new" last name (even if it's hyphenated) that isnt listed as your last name on your marriage cert?

Yes, they make a point of asking you what you want your new last name to be when you file for the marriage license. In this case, your marriage license needs to have your hyphenated name on it.

yes - when you go to the SS office (assuming you are in NY) they will only ask to see your old SS card and your marriage license. the application for the new SS card will have the space for your new name - whatever you want it to be. GL!

not true. when you file for your marriage license you actually sign your maiden name. the marriage license you receive in the mail has both your maiden name and your new surname on it, that's all. there is no apce for them to out what you "chose." that way you can use either/or, or any combination of the two.
mine looks like this:
Jane Smith/Jones
on the marriage license.

There is a spot on the marriage license that asks for "new surname" (if applicable) where you state whether you want to hyphenate.
This is carried over to the marriage certificate.

Yeah, but they don't always take that as set in stone. I know people who opted NOT to change their name when they got the license and then successfull changed their name anyway using their marriage license. Actually, FM LIJoy. I think she did this - or is in the process of doing this.
I *think* (not sure) the only time it would be a problem would be if you HADN'T yet changed your DL, SS#, etc. and wanted to use your married name. Heck, using just my marriage license, I was able to sign both my maiden and married names on my closing papers for our house. (I hadn't changed my name yet on my SL or SS card, but did opt to change my name on my marriage certificate.) The bank messed up and put Kara Middle Maiden Married on all the papers. All they needed to do was get a copy of my marriage cert to see this. I didn't keep my maiden name at all when I changed, but we were able to put it on the title and mortgage this way.
I was just told that I'll need a copy of my marriage certificate whenever we sell the house.
