Children's Zyrtec- side effects?
Hi ladies! DS was just diagnosed with a pollen allergy. The doc prescribed 1/4 tsp. of children's zyrtec (generic-cetirizine). Has your child ever taken this and had side effects? He mentioned that he might get tired on it, but I'm not sure how common that is. BTW, DS is almost 2 years old. Thanks!

Re: Children's Zyrtec- side effects?
I've never given DS Zyrtec, but our ped suggested we use Children's Claritin. She said she likes it better than Zyrtec because she said it has less side effects than Zyrtec. Zyrtec can cause some kids to get hyper.
My older step son used to take it and his ped said not to give it to him in the evening because it would keep him up.

My dr. said the opposite..really where do they get their info.. I wonder why there are sooo many opposing sides when it comes to drs..even in the same practice??

we use the generic one from bed bath and beyond or target - we use it before bed - so we haven't noticed any side effects..

it makes DS a little hyper! not too crazy, he still sleeps at night but is way more energetic when he is awake.

Re: Children's Zyrtec- side effects?
I was told to try it on him for the first time during the day, so that if it did make him hyper, he wouldn't be up all night (same with Bendryl).
When I use it, I give it right before bed. I don't know if it really affects my DS's sleeping, but might make him a little more tired.
It did/does help my DS when he can't sleep due to coughing. That and the humidifier were good for him.

Re: Children's Zyrtec- side effects?
other than it NOT working at all.. none
I use children's claritin - no side affects, not drowsy or hyper and works great. We use a half tsp every 12hrs.
I like it because it gives us control. We do a 7:30am dose then skip the 7pm to see if she's ok or not... if not we give her benedryl around 9:30 or right before she goes to sleep. Only if she needs to sleep easier. If she falls asleep without we skip it all together.

DS started it 18 months.
No side effects for him that we could ever tell.
I gave it right after dinner or just before bed. I mixed it in an ounce or 2 of apple juice or OJ and he sucked it down!

Re: Children's Zyrtec- side effects?
The ped and allergist had DD on a slightly higher dose at 1st - and it made her VERY hyper and strange- then we reduced it and it made her weepy and tired. I do not like zyrtec at all. I greatly prefer children's allerga.
I thought she was acting strange and when I googled it I found a lot of people said it did strange things to their children.

Re: Children's Zyrtec- side effects?
So I gave him his first dose today. I have to say, I didn't really notice any difference in his nose. Still running like a faucet. Is the effect supposed to happen right away or do their little bodies need to build it up in their system? I kinda thought I'd see a difference immediately.
ETA: He didn't seem tired or hyper. Normal behavior so at least that's good.

Both of my DDs (16 months and 2.5 years) have taken it and have not suffered any side effects.

It doesn't work right away. You should see a difference in 2 days. Hope he gets some relief. DS is almost 18 months old and is dying with seasonal allergies...

Re: Children's Zyrtec- side effects?
My ped recommended zyrtec fir DS when he has a cold. We've used it at night with no known side effects. It stopped his cough and runny nose. Dosage was half a teaspoon.
