Chimney Scams????

OK, we had the chimney sweep guys come to the house Friday. They told me that I need a liner in my chimney (not the fireplace, the chimney for the natural gas heating element). They said that I should put the liner in before the contractor starts work, because the chimney might be leaking carbon monoxide and that could make the contractor and us sick. He really freaked me out. Then I told my neighbor about this, and she said its a scam. That they always say that to sell liners. P.S.- The liner will cost $1,500.

Has anyone else had this said to them by a chimney company? Is this a scam? TIA.

My DH says those chimney companies are all scams.... you just need to clean out your own chimney once every xx amount of years.

Then again, he is a TOTAL DIYer...

Oh, I needed this info. Our new house has two fireplaces. It's low on our list right now as we won't be moving in until the spring but I know we need to get them looked at.

When we converted to gas....we had to get a liner put in out chimmney, BUT that was according to new town regulations. Maybe you can call your town and see if you need one.

PS...there are ALOT of chimney scams...we got calls from on company saying that they wanted to come and clean our fireplace and chimney and that the previous owners had used their service. Hmmmm...we DONT have a fireplace...so i told that to the woman on the phone and she said...are you sure?? Hmmm yes positive...unless the old owners took it with them, we dont have one! then I hung up!! what a moron!!

But you have to have a chimney for your oil burner.... not just a fireplace chimney.

I had TWO different chimney companies call us and say they used to serve the people who lived there before us. What scam artists. They tell me that so that I would use them I guess.

Call Bestway chimney. They are out of Levittown. They were just at our house did a lot of work and not a lot of money! My dad used them and refered my FIL to them and the price for the chimney liney was WAY LESS!

We had that thing put in our chimney- I think it cost us 1k but we were told it was a lifetime guarantee...

I understand that...but she was insisting that they came and cleaned our FIREPLACE chimney...which we do NOT have...
