Chocolate Jesus stirs bitter controversy
A life-size sculpture of a naked Jesus made out of chocolate has angered a Roman Catholic organization and forced a Manhattan art gallery to reconsider exhibiting it during Easter week.
Chocolate Jesus
Do you think it should be showed in the art gallery or not?
ETS: I didn't intend for this to cause any controversy. I just thought it was a bit crazy/interesting.

Re: Chocolate Jesus stirs bitter controversy
What offended me was that "the artist considered it a joke" as well as "he invited people to take a bite out of it"
It should not be displayed.

first of all, it doesn't even LOOK like his image!
second of all, i agree with sue - encouraging people to "take a bite out of it??????"
next thing you know, people will ask if it has "nuts"

kind of, it just seems silly that people take these things so seriously and get so offended by them.
But what is the difference if it is sculpted out of marble or chocolate?
And why is it then not offensive that we represent jesus' ressurection with chocolate bunnies and marshmallow peeps?

"Take a bite out of it??" Sounds like some punk jerk just looking for publicity - if he was really "artistic" he would have come up with a better line to say - I say take it down and don't give this guy any more attention than he already has!

I agree...there's a big difference between Easter chocolate bunnies and chocolate Jesus who is a God symbol to Roman Catholics...I actually take offense by your comment.
There's so many other things that you can make out of chocolate...why choose something so controversial and offend people...I don't get it...some people are just bored I guess.

when was the last time someone was able to eat a marble sculpture?
and why is this work of "art", in the nude? AND he has a ponytail??????????? W T F is that?
as for the chocolate bunnies and marshmallow peeps...that's the commercialization aspect of it, just like Santa Claus and Christmas. Gimmick for the kiddies who are too young to understand the whole concept. agree with it or not, it's not on the same level as this artists' rendition of JC. it's offensive IMO.

I agree that that people do take certain things too seriously but not when it comes to people's religion or other beliefs. I bet if there was something that you believed in strongly and that was portrayed in a comic or disrespectful way, you would take offense to it.

ITA. And on another level do Catholics not believe that the Eucharist is the body of Christ? Not sure if this is the artists interpretation or intent, but it does follow some sort of logic.
Also, would people be equally upset if it were a Chocolate naked statue of Isis?

Yes we Catholics believe the Eucharist is the body of Christ, but the Eucharist does not depict a naked Christ on it.

Yes we Catholics believe the Eucharist is the body of Christ, but the Eucharist does not depict a naked Christ on it. I understand that, and I understand that many think a naked depiction of Christ is blasphemous, but I was referring to the "take a bite" bit from the previous post.
I just see this becoming like the "Dung Blessed Mother" from back when Guilianni was mayor. It will be a huge debate & then the 1st ammendment will get tossed into the mix & all it will do is create MORE publicity for people to go & see it than if the media had not been involved.

You can't compare them both. The Eucharist is done to commemorate Jesus' sacrifice for all people and the other (taking a bite out of the chocolate Jesus) would be done for "artistic" purposes...and I think it was stated by the artist "to take a bite" in a rather sarcastic way. But I understand what you were referring to.

Which one was sarcastic? I am not sure I follow what you are saying (and I am not trying to be snotty I really want to know what the difference is.)
Clarified.
