and why is this work of "art", in the nude? AND he has a ponytail??????????? W T F is that?

I'll admit, the ponytail seems like a bit of an an anachronism, but who cares? It's a sculpture and a pretty good one, at that. I agree the "take a bite out of it" thing rubs me the wrong way, but what about the sculpture itself is wrong or offensive? And what's wrong with depicting Jesus in the nude? I see nothing shameful in the human body and Jesus was in fact human.

This is VERY offensive to me. Not because he has a ponytail, not because his genitals are exposed. The fact that it's chocolate is a bit much . . . I'm offended because it was a JOKE by the artist. This wasn't even intended to be ART - it's supposed to be a JOKE!!

What isn't offensive about that?

I care. IMO, I couldn't care less how well the sculpture is made, it's offensive to show his genitals - and it's offense that he was given a pony tail - NOT the way his image should be depicted at all.
and sure there is nothing shameful about the human body - but this wasn't intended as an exhibit to display the beauty of the human image - IMO, this is in poor taste.

I just see this becoming like the "Dung Blessed Mother" from back when Guilianni was mayor. It will be a huge debate & then the 1st ammendment will get tossed into the mix & all it will do is create MORE publicity for people to go & see it than if the media had not been involved.

Oh! That pizzed me off so much!! I went to see that, and it was really beautiful. I would never have known it was dung if not for the controversy.

However, the scuptures of children with vaginas for ears and mouths caused no controversy

Re: Chocolate Jesus stirs bitter controversy

I don't get why it's offensive that he has a pony tail? I'm serious- I don't understand why that is big deal

we really don't know what he looked like exactly- you normally see him with long hair- so what's wrong with pulling it back?

an artist should be allowed to express themselves how they see fit- that's the point of art- and of America

if you don't like- then don't look at it

To me its not offensive bc he has a ponytail or is nude...its the whole design in general, the way it is portrayed by the artist...

Shelly people are so selective about it. That is why I am a purist when it comes to the first amendment. Art is art & should not be censored, whether or not people agree with it or repulsed by it.

I am sorry if this offends anyone & I don't mean to make this an anti-jesus thing (b/c it isn't) but no matter what you do someone will be offended. Just like when they wanted to cover the statue of DavidChat Icon

I agree 100% I just think its funny what causes controversy.

Many of the books we are required to read in schools were once censored for various reasons.

Religion is a touchy subject that really divides people. I guess that's why it gets so much pressChat Icon

To me- its like the KKK. You may not like what they have to say, but I beleive they have a right to say it.

Doesn't offend me but it would take a lot to do that.

I feel the same was as MrsMBV does regarding the first amendment.

I agree as well. People being malformed against their will does not offend people but other things (like a naked David) will. It is so strange.
My Mil actually freaked when we were kids & DH had to read about Darwin, and actually said this book has no place in a public school.Chat Icon

Re: Chocolate Jesus stirs bitter controversy

If the artists purpose was to show his love of Jesus/catholocism and he expressed that, then it wouldn't be AS offensive (the naked genital exposure thing is a bit much IMO).

BUT...I sadly think it was someone who wanted their 15 minutes of fame..at a risk he knew was going to happen-offending members of the christian community.

Me personally? I feel to each their own. I wouldn't see the statue in person-have zero desire to do so-if others are intrigued by it, then that's up to them.

You both summed it up nicely. I totally agree.

I heard on the radio that it was pure "coincidence" that the release of this sculpture was to happen during Holy Week...yeah, right.

Re: Chocolate Jesus stirs bitter controversy

I would like to know what image of Jesus is acceptable? The one where he is a white, blond haired, blue eyed man? Nobody knows what Jesus actually looked like. We only have ARTISTS that have created an image for us. I understand that this one isn't for everyone, but just like all the others it has a right to be seen.
