Choosing b/w newer ideal home not in your ideal neighborhood vs older home in ideal neighborhood?

What would you choose?

A practically new house that is almost ideal to what you want in terms of layout, size, in a good neighborhood and great SD but not really where you want to live overall (town wise). Size wise you could stay in it for life, but you just don't "love" the neighborhood, although it's very nice and safe.

Or choose a house in the neighborhood and location you want, but needs loads of work (also a great SD)that will take so much time and will never be new really. House is smaller than you ideally want and will probably not be large enough to be a forever home.

How do you choose when both have their flaws and neither one meets all of your criteria?

You can change your house but you can't change the location. I wouldn't buy a house somewhere I don't want to live. With that said, it doesn't sound like you like the house in the better neighborhood very much. I would wait and see what comes on the market in the better area.

we almost put an offer in on a tiny, run down house in our ideal neighborhood, DH really wanted to make an offer but I was unsure. a week later our house which is newer, 3x the size and has waterview in our ideal neighborhood came on the market for almost the same price.
I think its worth waiting.

I'd always choose location. But in this case it sounds like both houses aren't quite right, so I would probably keep looking.

Honestly, if I was looking for a second home, (which who knows what the future will bring for us Chat Icon )I would not compromise anything, neighborhood or house. If you compromise anything, you may regret it at a later date....

I would say older home in perfect location. You can fix up a home to your liking but what is a great home if it isn't in the location you want to be - it will forever nag at you. I think you are better with a lesser home in the perfect location than a better home in a not so great place. Besides you can always say it is a forever home - but you don't know what will happen 10, 15, 20 years down the road - you might be able to upgrade later at some point.

Yep, crappier house in better location.

I bet the older house is not so crappy though.

New is not necessarily better..

Given those two choices, I would definitely go with the better neighborhood. But if you're not sure or think you won't like the house, it can't hurt to keep looking...

Go wtih the location - that's the one thing you can't change.

I know so many people who've bought nicer homes in ok locations and have taken a loss on them to move to a "better" location in this economy.

ITA!! LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!!!!
this is why we chose the 75 year old house on a cul-de-sac in the town we wanted over a newer home in a town we weren't really sold on. i'd rather customize our old home as we reno it anyway!

ITA. If you can hold out for the perfect house AND location, that's what I would do. Otherwise I'd choose location over house style.

I think you should wait. Your perfect house in your perfect neighborhood will come. Just be patient. If you buy a house in a neighborhood you don't like, you WILL regret it.

I'd go with the neighborhood you want - everything else can be changed except for that. I wouldn't settle for anything - go with the one in your ideal neighborhood...
