Chores....when? Does this sound right?

Teddy is 3 1/2 and I have started giving him daily chores he must do in the house...we started with one at a time and have worked our way up. Here is his list...
*Help Make Bed
*Help Set table for dinner
*Help clear table from dinner
*Helping put the laundry in the washer/dryer
*Emptying bathroom garbage every night
*Helping empty/fill the dishwasher

This is in addition to the standard:
Toy clean up
No clothes on the floor
Put your stuff away

He seems to handle it well and he gets a sticker for everything he does. But when I spoke to my family member this morning she said he is to young for all of this.

I admire you so much! come teach me how to do this!

I don't understand too young for what? You're not asking him to do anything dangerous, you're teaching him aspects of real life. He feels useful and valued. I seriously applaud you!

My DS turned 4 in January and he does "typical cleanup" daily

1. Put toys away.
2. Dirty clothes in hamper after shower.
3. Brings all dishes, cups, to sink after snacks or meals.
4. Helps bring garbage to the front door.

Never to young! Chat Icon

We have the Melissa and Doug magnetic chart and I got magnetic printer paper (paper with magnet attached to the back) and made my own for one's not listed on there. He gets a smiley face magnet that sticks to the chart if at the end of the week he has done all of his chores he gets to do 1 special thing...ie go see a movie just daddy and him, make cupcakes with mommy, or he picks a meal and I make it. Sometimes we'll add in going to marvel and getting an ice cream cone. But he can't put up an argument of any sort, and he must do it exactly when I tell him too. I am kinda strict with it, because it's also teaching him to listen.

Chat Icon!!!! You are so sweet but you give me too much credit. Her validation was "he's a child he should be allowed to be a child and worry about chores when he gets older." Which always makes meChat Icon!

That's awesome.

They say at this age they WANT to help anyway. So having set chores and directions only helps them. They get satisifaction out of it. They have ownership of it and pride in it.

It works for some, not others.

AJ says she'll clean but won't LOL

Re: Chores....when? Does this sound right?

My 3 1/2 year old DS has a very similar chore list. I say start young because it will become a habit now. If you wait until they are older I think it is much much harder to get them to help.
