Maybe this country should just let everything just BE and not vote on any important issue.
Here's the deal. Women had to fight for the right to vote. Blacks had to fight for the right to do everything. This is just part of the process of living in a republic based on democracy.
easy to say as a straight white male!!!
Don't assume you know me. The facts are the facts. The thing people that are voting on this issue are getting hung up on is the word "Marriage". I would bet the farm that if they changed it to same sex "union" or "partnership" there would be a lot less resistance. But the process is the process and that's the country we live in. It should just be but this is the country we live in. It will pass in every state of the union. It will just take some time.
Are you not a straight white male?
Okay let me clarify since you seem to want to make an issue out of what I said.
Don't assume you know me means don't assume what's easy or not for me based on very limited knowledge or information garnered from the exposure you have had on a chat board.

Christie, the subject of speculation as a possible GOP vice presidential candidate, has said the issue "should not be decided by 121 people in the statehouse in Trenton."
Yes, you are correct.... It should just BE. It shouldn't be voted on by anyone, it should just BE....

I understand what he's saying. Traditionally, the definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. Some people have difficulty adapting this definition to two males or two females. If another term was used (such as union or partnership), there might not be so much resistance. It takes time for some people to accept the change.

So people should suffer because bigots need time to accept it?

Re: Chris Christie vetoes Marriage Bill
He took the easy way out--he doesn't alienate his Republican base and he also doesn't ultimately make the decision. Doesn't make it right. It should just be. This is a civil rights issue when you get right down to it--should voters be allowed to decide what is fair for a group of people that are being discriminated against? No.

Throughout history, groups have had to fight for their rights and this is no different. Christie does not want to rock the boat - he does not want to be the one to change a law that's been in effect for decades. No one is saying it's fair, it's just the way it is. People don't like change, especially when it goes against their beliefs or the way they were brought up. Unfortunately, it takes time. Hopefully, in the end, things will be as they should.

He played along party lines. No surprise. Too bad he couldn't be a bigger person and do what is right.

Just read the whole thread. I do not understand the sentiment of "it takes time" or "this is the process". So the Civil War should have happened and men should have died because "it takes time". Blacks should have endured years of inequality because "it takes time." Women needed to fight for the right to vote because "it takes time". No, sorry, it is small minded people holding other people back from their natural rights. We are an embarrassment of a country right now. Future generations will look back on the gay rights fight, just as we do the civil rights fight and women's rights fight, and shake their heads at us.

I certainly had the same outrage then. However, if you are seeing a marked difference in the amount of outrage, I do think that public opinion has shifted substantially on this subject, even in the last two years. My reactions have nothing to do with politics, and I imagine that the same is true for many who feel strongly about this issue. To me, it's more of a moral/ethical question than a political one, and my feelings on this subject surpass my political beliefs. I would support a republican who believes in gay rights faster than a democrat who doesn't.

This. And not for nothing, but to those who feel that women and blacks should have had to fight for their rights that they have, I have nothing to say other than how disturbing it is that people still feel slavery and the belittlement of women was ok. So it's ok to not treat women and blacks as lesser human beings because they fought for their rights? What happened to learning from history and learning that all people are created equal? Nothing but disturbing in my opinion that people still feel that civil rights and a person's equality is an issue to be debated.

I'd say the grand majority of people here are New Yorkers who probably didn't know that the vote was happening in another state. Now that Christie has had national attention from his flirtations with the presidential race, his political moves are making the news. And he's a controversial figure who has been hostile toward teachers and municipalities, which made enemies for him who would love to publicize a bigoted and political move like this.
I will say that I was pretty pizzed when the New York senate voted down the same-sex marriage bill 2 years ago. That did make front page news...I can't say whether it caused uproar on LIF. The only way WE got the republicans to accept it (eventually) was by letting the Millionaire tax expire and making huge cuts to education to balance the budget.

I don't think anyone feels like people should HAVE to fight for their rights - it's just a fact that they have to. Not saying it's right - it's just the way it is.

I just don't understand how anyone can just be so blase about that. It may be the way it is but it is outrageous and shameful that these things happened in our history.

You're right it is - and that's why people fight to change things. Individuals will always have differing opinions on topics and this is no different. This is how change comes about - one group trying to convince another that things should be done differently. Whatever their reasons, people have their convictions whether others think they are rational or not.
ETA: By the way, I am not being blase about anything - I am only looking at the situation objectively, and commenting as such. I am not commenting from a personal standpoint - just looking at the situation as it stands.

Are you serious????
Really? REALLY!?!?
This is a civil rights issue. I don't care who you are. if you're against it, you're going to be on the wrong side of history, period.
I think it's really disgusting to make the assumption that people care more about politics than about the rights of our fellow Americans. The only people I would honestly say that about are some politicians, including Christie.
