Chrysler closing ALL 30 plants for 1 month starting Friday
They just announced it on Channel 7 news. They will close after the shift on Friday and not reopen until Jan 19th.
All those workers must be so scared about it never opening again.

sweet Jesu
on a related note, did you know that one of the big reasons this bailout is needed is b/c of the PENSION payments these companies are making...
it seems the majority of the money would be to pay people who aren't even employeed anymore...rather than taking the companies into the new millenium..

so the retired people should not have their promised pensions? I know this is a giant amount of money, but what is the solution?

I didn't say or insinuate that. I was just stating a "fact".

I don't think she's saying that. I saw it more as a comment on how a strong union like the UAW might end up hurting their employees in the long run.
They got them these fantastic pensions and other retirement benefits in their contract, but if the company goes under they can't get paid out at all. Maybe it would have been better to get a little less at retirement so that the company is able to survive and pay. KWIM?

this is how all the other non-union auto makers lure and keep their workers...

Not good at all and I heard the union workers (all 50,000 of them) have to go on unemployment until the plant reopens.
Ford and GM are also extendeding thier holiday shutdown to an extra week.
