Cigarette Smoke---Am I the only one that this bothers?
One thing I've been hating MORE & MORE as the days go by are smokers the stand right by the building door, and blow in people's faces. Not only there, but walking past that pollution in the street annoys me, too. Call me selfish, but I've gotten used to smoke-free bars, public restaurants, etc... and I guess I'm more sensitive to the smoke than ever before that I wish smokers would just go somewhere else!
Don't get me wrong, everyone has the right to choose what they do in life, but is it fair that I have to suffer from someone else's habit (which some studies show is actually worse)? I think I'm going to snap at a stranger one day, because it's completely inconsiderate & unfair that I can't walk the street at any given time without inhaling someone's vice.
PS: I'm not trying to offend LIFers who smoke, but IMO I seriously think that it's unfair for others when smokers subject others to 2nd-hand smoke.

I can't stand it either. I also hate it when I'm driving behind someone who's smoking, and they flick their butt out the window right at my car!!!

Being a former smoker, I actually love the smell of it since I miss it so much.
But I do hate when people stand in front of doorways...because they are blocking the door. I don't understand why people purposely stand in the way.
But I am with ya on the no-smoking in the bars and such...it's nice to come home and not be smelly

Lichi - I totally respect what you are saying. People who do nt smoke should not be subjected to it. BUT ...what is the solution? It is not illegal, smokers cannot smoke in public buildings, restaurants, bars, airports, airplanes, etc ... anymore. where should they go? Outside is the only option, right?

Re: Cigarette Smoke---Am I the only one that this bothers?
Being a former smoker I have to say that if they are outside, there's really nothing you can do or say about it. I can understand the 2nd hand smoke argument if you are in a enclosed space. Outside and in their cars is the only place smokers have left to smoke besides their homes.
BUT, I do feel that when smokers stand RIGHT in front of the entrance to a building, it's kind of rude. Everybody's walking in and out and you are greeting them with a puff of smoke.
I think smokers should practice better smoking etiquette - don't throw butts on the ground and don't stand close to entrances.

it is totally rude when they stand directly in front of the entrance to teh building. Beyond that I can't really say anything, like if I am walking down the street or driving. But in baseball stadiums it's rude too!
I used to smoke, so I am thankful the bars ban smoking. (don't smell it, don't miss it, don't smell of it!)

Re: Cigarette Smoke---Am I the only one that this bothers?
It's pretty funny - I was just discussing this last night with DH.
This past August, it has been 3 years that I haven't smoked - I am very proud of myself that I quit, I smoked on and off for many many years.
Well, DH is a smoker. It never bothered me that he smoked, he smoked sitting right next to me while sitting on the couch, it never bothered me.
Well, about a couple of days before I found out that I was pregnant - I couldn't take it anymore. He would light up and I would have to walk out of the room. I can't stand it anymore!! Since we found out that I am pregnant, he now smokes outside.
But the whole walking into a building or a restaurant - I think that is rude. Especially now that I am pregnant - don't people know that they are affecting the baby? I honestly think there should be designated areas where people should smoke - not at an entrance why of a building.

I have never smoked and if someone wants to do it..then it's really up to them. But I really dislike when they all stand in front of the entrance of the building. It's true they need to smoke outside..but must they stand right at the front entrance......how about being a little considerate and step to the side and smoke there...JMO

Elbee, I completely understand that outside, and their own homes, are the only places to smoke, but when smoking outside, do people have to stand by building doorways (especially when it's raining), or have their last puffs before they head down the steps to the subway, or smoke as they walk in a crowd of strangers, etc... this is what I meant.

Re: Cigarette Smoke---Am I the only one that this bothers?
It has been almost a year since I had a cigarette. I am really proud of myself for being able to go this long, not that I don't want one, I just know the down side and want to be around for the kids. But I totally agree that people who stand right in front of the entrance to your building blowing smoke in your face as you walk in, is unnecessary. The smoke bothers me and I hate having to smell it. I'm not sure what the solution is, but it bothers me to, but what can they do?

Re: Cigarette Smoke---Am I the only one that this bothers?
unfortunately the city doesn't provide "smoker's areas" like disney world. I am a smoker and I do stand away from the entrance when I smoke. But in the rain, there would be no way I'd stand in the rain to smoke, I stand under the buldings cover.
I was just thinking the other day how in a city so big, they can not provide ashtrays on city streets.

I think that's probably a start for designating smoker's areas. Maybe if they provided ash trays in areas away from others (especially entrances to places), then everyone could be happy.

When I smoked, I tried my best to be considerate...I didn't stand in doorways, I wouldn't light up in large crowds or while I was waiting in line, I tried to exhale downwards so smoke wouldn't fly into people's faces as much etc. Not all smokers are jerky.
And I have come across jerky anti-smoking people...one time I was standing by the curb near one of those outdoor cigarette cones having a cigarette and some @sshole comes and stands 3 feet away from me and starts yelling at me for smoking. Um, then don't come stand next to me - you see me with a cigarette by an ashtray for god sakes. That was completely uncalled for Ironically, this was after he took all the papers from his pocket and threw them on the floor.

Re: Cigarette Smoke---Am I the only one that this bothers?
I used to be a smoker too and now even though I love the smell, I cannot stand to have it blown in my face.
Also, I hate when smokers throw their butts behind them not realizing they are in a crowd. Just last week my hand was burnt from someones ashes and yesterday I saw a girl throw her cigarette in the wind and burnt a hole in another person jacket. She was ******.
Smokers have every right to smoke, they should just be considerate of others around them. Inconsiderate smokers give the considerate ones a bad Rep. IMO.

Because right outside my building it is my legal right to smoke, because I don't feel like getting wet in the rain to have a cigarette, especially since my building is particularly windy. Like I said , personally I do not stand anywhere near the building, especially the doors normally and when it rains I stand under the bulding cover, but do not block the door. So if the smoke waifs near the doors for the 2 minute cigarette break I take, then so be it.

Re: Cigarette Smoke---Am I the only one that this bothers?
If they need to smoke and it's raining, they should grab an umbrella and smoke away. But that it's very unlikely to happen. Like someone mentioned....why get wet if it's only for a few minutes...thinking of them only but not the people that are coming in and out of the building that do not smoke.. I think the only solution is that every building owner should build an enclosed room that fits a few people in the front entrance of the building(Smoking Room Area) to avoid all this from happening......And if it rains...smokers do not have to get wet either.....and it won't bother those coming in and out of the building either....with or without rain.....
