CIO Helps (only advocates please)

Ok, for those of you who have had success with CIO, how did you do this?

I plan on doing this starting on Thursday. I want to do it for naps and nighttime.

I know you put your DC in the crib sleepy (not asleep though).

How long did you wait before you went to check in on them?

How long did you wait till you gave in (if you did)?

I want to know whats an acceptable amount of time?

Thanks!

Re: CIO Helps (only advocates please)

I think it depends on the personality of the child and the age of the child.
For us, we did it at 8 months with Ava and she's just a very persistent and stubborn kid, always was, so we didn't check on her because it would just make it worse. She cried 40 minutes the first night, 20 the second and not again after that.
Just be really sure that you are going to stick with it before you actually do it because if you decide halfway through that you don't want to do it, then they cried for nothing.

Re: CIO Helps (only advocates please)

*let me start by saying that sleep was never an issue for us until DS started losing his pacifier in the middle of the night. he would (usually) easily go back to sleep with it but he could not put it back in his own mouth which meant we were getting up 5, 6 times a night.

we started CIO when he turned 5 months old and took away the pacifier, cold turkey, that same night.

however, i will say that i see SO many mommies post about sleep issues around the 4-5 month mark that i don't think that it was just pacifier issues.

How long did you wait before you went to check in on them?

- i had the video monitor so i could check on him that way. i knew (mommy instinct) that if i went in there it would only make things worse.

How long did you wait till you gave in (if you did)?

- i did not give in. i told myself that i would allow him to cry up to one hour before going in. he only cried for 30 minutes - hysterically at times - and then slept through the night until 5:30am, his normal waking time at that age.

I want to know whats an acceptable amount of time?

- that is something you have to decide for yourself. i personally felt that if he cried for more than an hour i would not be able to handle it. some mommies know that their kids are different and can cry for longer or shorter periods of time. but i PERSONALLY feel that more than 1.5 - 2 hours is just too long.
