Depends on your child's reactions and your comfort level and which book you read!

We used the following method: We would start by letting him cry for 1 minute and then going in for 2 minutes. Then each time we'd leave the room we'd increase the time we'd allow him to cry by 1 minute, until we hit 5 minutes and then we stuck there. We never let him cry for more than 5 minutes at a time. We always comforted him for 2 minutes.
I have to say, I was AWFUL at this. My DH was much better.

Re: CIO how oftenm are you suppose to go in to calm them and...
For Jacob, going in to calm him made him scream even harder and longer, so I had to use the method where I let him CIO until he just passed out from exhaustion. It was hard to do, first night it took an hour and a half of crying on and off, and finally fell asleep. Next night took 20 min, and the third night took 5 min. Now, no problems.
My biggest mistake was waiting until he was one to implement it. I was sooooooooo tired for one year. Next baby, I will be instilling it at 5 months old. Good luck, its tougher on you so hang in there!

see this is what happens to me i go in at the set time and time it sem like she is almost calming down a bit and then i go in and she is worse. I agree next time i do this at 6 months or so. I wanted to do it at 6 months when i was home for a week on vacation but she was SOOO sick with the flu and bronchitis i couldnt do it then. its hard but this will pass i know. Thanks everyone.

Re: CIO how oftenm are you suppose to go in to calm them and...
I just did CIO for the first time last night and also put him cold turkey out of his swaddle. DS is 5 months old.
I did not go in AT ALL and he stopped crying after 25 minutes and slept for 7 hours before getting up to eat. I think going in to check on them makes it worse. My pedia advised us not to. it's like teasing them that you are coming to get them, over and over again.

Wow, I have to admit I was too shy to say that I didn't go in to calm. I find it reassuring to hear I wasn't alone. In the beginning we went to visit her and she got much angrier, so we felt it was kinder not to go in and she ended up falling asleep faster without our interference. I don't think thats right for everyone though -- some kids do relax getting a pat on the back... just not my kid!

Re: CIO how oftenm are you suppose to go in to calm them and...
I've only had to let Marron CIO a couple of times. She usually goes to sleep with no problem. But the times that I did let her CIO she would start crying the minute I put her down after comforting her. I always kept extending the time between comforts (10 mins, 15 mins, 20 mins etc). Now that she is 1 I calm her down then lay her back in the crib and tell her "okay, it's time to sleep now". If she starts crying I just say "you can cry if you need to, it's okay, but you need to go to sleep now".

Jacob doesnt really cry...he whines. We usually let him whine until he falls asleep which is usually 10 minutes or so
