CIO question-if your child goes to sleep with no problem

Does anyone have a child who goes to sleep without incident but wakes frequently?

DS is almost 1 and his sleeping has become awful in recent months. He wakes several times a night now.

We did a version of CIO with DD when she was 1 year old and it worked (it was tough, but we all got through it and were better off in within a couple of days).

DS's sleep issues are different. He goes to sleep like clockwork at 7:30. He gets up for the day around 6am. No problem with this at all.

However, for the last couple of months he has been waking 1-4 times a night. Sometimes he will wake just for a few minutes, other times he is up for an hour. We let him fuss for a couple of minutes and sometimes he will go back to sleep. Other times it just causes him to escalate and he'll start screaming/crying.

When we pick him up, rock him, put in a paci, sometimes he will go back to sleep. Other times it doesn't help and he continues to cry or spit out the paci repeatedly.

I'm thinking of breaking the paci cycle. But, that's not the only issue since he sometimes cries even when he finds it or we give it back to him. So, the paci won't be enough. We need some sleep training too.

Any advice?

I hate to say it but Ronan was like that until he got the tubes. Could he have an ear infection? I think he has the tubes right? Still possible to get an ear infection with them tho less likely

He had tubes in August. That's about when my great sleeper became a terrible sleeper.

We take him to the doctor fairly often, this time we thought it was an ear infection (even took him to urgent care and they said it looked like it), well we took him to the ped yesterday and nope, no ear infection.

In these last few months he has has ear infections, but not the most recent 1 month. He has has other illnesses so that makes it harder to sleep train at all since I don't want to leave him to cry if he is sick. But, there have been lots of times when he is not sick and he just won't sleep-he is in a bad cycleChat Icon Chat Icon

Overall, my DS was/is a good sleeper and had roughly the same schedule when he was your DS's age.

We had stages where he would wake through the night, though. Most times, it was due to either teething, or that he was not eating enough during the day to keep him satisfied enough to sleep through the night. We did have a period where I think he was having bad dreams, but it passed. He will do it at times when he is sick (coughing a lot, wakes up and then has trouble going back down.)

I stopped going in after a while if he was just fussing for a few minutes. After about 10 minutes, though, I will go in if he is still crying and sing to him until he goes back to sleep. Once the current issue passes, he always goes back to his usual good sleeping pattern.

ETA - I know it's hard, but I try to remember that this stage won't last forever and that while I was usually tired the next day, I got to hold and rock him again for at least a couple of nights while we went to sleep.
