Another CIO question-those whose DC's sleep in their room
Sorry for another CIO question.
I think that we are going to have to let Sienna CIO once she is feeling better-she went from STTN a month ago to waking 4 times a night to nurse.
Our issue is her crib is in our room and for the moment, it has to stay there.
How do I go about this? She gets cranky and ready to sleep about 8-9pm. I would want to do Ferber as I am a softie.
Help!

No CIO advice but it sounds like the 4 month regression (both my boys experienced this - not that they ever STTN, but they were doing stretches and then hit 4 months and were up every 2-3 hrs again)

Jessee-did they go back to stretches of sleep without CIO?

Yes, I just rode it out. It was probably 4-6 wks of torture (esp. since I went back to work around this time). They started only waking for one feeding between 5-6 months (so good 6-7 hr stretches). I did modified CIO with Ryan at 6 months, and Colin at 7 months

Re: Another CIO question-those whose DC's sleep in their room
Do it on a weekend, or on a day when both you and DH have off the next day and can get some rest if necessary.
If you can, try to get DH and yourself to sleep outside of that room. I honestly think that when we moved DS to his own room, it made a world of difference, at least for when we were trying sleep training.
The method I did, was more of a no-cry Ferber method. (I'm really a wimp) DS would whine a little if I set him down awake, I would wait 3 min or until he was getting to the point where he was full blown crying. I'd go in there and shush him, pat his tummy, stroke his cheek with the back of my hand. Never make eye contact, because DS would flash me a smile and then start screaming right after and I'd loose it. He also has this giraffe he likes to stare, so I hung it out of his reach and shake it a little. Put on his noise machine. And leave. Even if he's still whining. wait another 3 min. If he ever got to the point where he was full blown crying, I'd pull him out, shush him, carry him around until he was quiet and start again.
At some point he started to take a paci, he started to chew on it, for his teething, but soon discovered he can suck on it and get comfort, it was like a revelation! I started to offer it, and he'd quite down right away after the 3 min interval.
It took about 2 weeks. But now DS goes to sleep on his own. If you increase the interval, or eliminate intervals all together, you can get her trained faster, in theory anyway.
When his teething started to get worse, I would actually let him cry a little if he lost his paci, to let him know I'm not the paci fairy and if he wants it he better hold on. When he's ready for bed, he hangs on to that paci for dear life.
Teething has changed a few things, but we are probably going to continue with this.
Thing is, there are so many opinions on CIO, IMO listen to everything, and judge for yourself whats best for your baby. I think only a mother really knows what her baby is ready for or not.

Re: Another CIO question-those whose DC's sleep in their room
everyone told me that CIO would NOT work if the baby was in the same room and I really wanted to prove them wrong, but once I put him into another room and did the CIO... it worked like a charm - and i see how it wouldn't work with baby in the same room.
move her out! you have to do it... or it will never work. she's going to see you and smell you and want you. it's almost unfair to her - KWIM?
also, you have to figure out what kind of baby your baby is. i thought ferber would work on him, but CIO was really the answer for him. i learned that when he cried for 10 minutes and then slept for over 11 hours. this was a baby who woke up 8-10+ times/night wanting to eat or comfort nurse!!!! he had NEVER sttn before that day... EVER!

Hayley-we don't have room at the moment. She is in there by necessity .
I know she is hungry because she gulps down BM. But I am exhausted. I know this is a sleep regression so I guess we either wait it out or experiment.
Is this even the case if we don't go in for 3-4 hours until after she is asleep?

How come there is no room? Believe me, you should see where Loey is sleeping. His crib is surrounded by boxes and tons of CRAP but it works.
I do think it's the case, because her problem is night-waking, right? I think that she will see you in the middle of the night... KWIM?

I FM'ed you why
This now happens even if I put her in the swing. Maybe I should experiment and see what happensi f she is in the swing at night in the living room.

I do CIO with LIam in the room. For us Ferber didn't work.. maybe because we were in the room and he could see us. But, we just put our head under the pillow and rode it out. He went to sleep without us int he room.. we did cio for that and then again each time he woke up.

Re: Another CIO question-those whose DC's sleep in their room
have you tried a dream feed - instead of waiting for her to wake up - breast feed her before you go to sleep
my son went to sleep at 7:30 and I would dream feed him around 10:30 - i jkust pick him up and put him to the boob - he sucks in his sleep - swap then back to bed - no diaper changes

Re: Another CIO question-those whose DC's sleep in their room
i could definitely try dreamfeeding. Otherwise we will have to do straight CIO in our room unless we can get another room ready.

Mich - I feel like you could put her crib in the office for the time being - in the space where the couch is

Michal, that is what i told Jeff. We are going to toss one desk, clean up the area, put the TV in our room and make Sienna a space until we get her nursery set up. I put my foot down yesterday.

Good!!!!! Seriously, you saw where Jordan is right now in NY - they don't need much space, just their OWN space!

Re: Another CIO question-those whose DC's sleep in their room
Personally I wouldn't recommend CIO (even ferber) with a BF baby at 4 months. At 4 months old both my girls were still waking multiple times at night to nurse. Plus there really IS a 4 month sleep regression that many babies go through.
Letting a baby fuss for a few minutes to see if they settle down on their own is perfectly fine, IMO. But sleep training at this point might be more frustrating than anything else.
