CIO w/ toddler in a bed? Quick Question!

Has anyone done CIO with a toddler in a bed?

I need to do CIO with DS who is 17 mos.

My question is: If DS gets out of bed, do I let him CIO and fall asleep on the floor? Or should I put him back into his bed? If he falls asleep on the floor, do I attempt to move him back into the bed?

He is in a full size bed but the mattress and boxspring are on the floor (so he can't fall out and hurt himself). His room is gated off and his furniture is secured to the walls with earthquake straps per my Ped's recommendation.

My Ped said to stay in the room with him on a chair the first few nights... but from my research, most people don't do this for CIO. Also at 9 mos pregnant, I don't want to sit on the rocker for hours and hours! Chat Icon

Thank you SO much for any advice!!!

Honestly, at 17 months, I do not think that CIO is going to work.

I would start a bedtime routine at this point.

Bath, snuggle time with you in bed reading a few stories, then lights out. Kiss him and leave the room. If he gets out of bed, I would bring him right back to bed and say to him "night night time! go to sleep!" and just keep bringing him back to bed. Letting him CIO at this age is going to be really hard. He will more than likely either try to climb over the gate, or just play and NOT sleep.

My son sometimes fell asleep on the floor when we converted his bed. Once I knew he was completely out I would transfer him to bed. When he fell asleep on the floor for naps I left him there (I wasn't risking waking him up!) Chat Icon

I disagree because I HAD to do it. DS was climbing out of the crib so we converted into the toddler bed. Then ensued 6 weeks of H E double hockey sticks!!! First, he would get out of the bed in the middle of the night and come into our bed. We tried putting him back, but it was SEVERAL times during the night. We tried putting a gate over his door. Eventually, DS began making himself vomit so we didn't leave the room. As per our Pediatrician, we unfortunately have to lock him in the room. We let him cry it out and it took him 3 days of being upset. NOW he sleeps in his bed the entire night and actually enjoys going to bed. We always had a bedtime routine (bath, milk, book, bed) so it didn't change. However, DS is now a great sleeper in the bed! GL!

ETA: I would let him sleep on the floor if he falls asleep on the floor. DS has once or twice!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Your DS sounds like mine to a "T"! He is getting up multiple times per night SCREAMING at the gate. Being pregnant and with a DH that works nights, I couldn't handle getting up all the time so I just wound up putting him in my bed or sleeping with him in his (I was desperate for sleep)...

With the new baby coming SOON, I am desperate to try CIO with him. We have always had a bedtime routine (bath milk books snuggle bed) and we even have a sound-spa with projector on the wall. Tonight is night #1. We'll see what happens! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: CIO w/ toddler in a bed? Quick Question!

If you're having a hard time would you consider putting him back in a crib? What is the reason for the move to a bed? DS is 19 months and I can't even fathom putting him in a bed yet, he doesn't have the maturity even though he's a baby giant! lol
I hope he stays in his crib for at least another year!

Tried that already a few months ago. DS never really liked his crib. He would scream and make himself vomit when we tried CIO in his crib at around 15 mos.

I spoke to the Ped about it and she said if he is comfortable in a "big boy bed" not to fight it... DS is in the 97% for height and weight so he would need to transition out of the crib on the sooner side anyway.

His room is totally babyproofed and that is why we have the gate up at his door.

I just made it through 1.5 hours of CIO. Not too bad for night #1. I went in to put him back in his bed in intervals using Sumerlyn's day 1 schedule at 3,5,7,10,10,10,10.

Hoping he stays down until morning! Chat Icon
