Cleaning baby's ears...

When do you start using q-tips? I've been cleaning his ears with a washcloth and warm water during bath time for now.

Re: Cleaning baby's ears...

I used those Q-tips with the big end from about 2 weeks on.

Her ears get really gross. I have to use Q-tips. I just try to be extremely careful.

You should not clean your baby's ears with Q-tips, the high wax build up is completely normal and acts as protection for the ear drum. As gross as it may seem, its there for a reason!

You can use them to clean the outside of the ear.

Re: Cleaning baby's ears...

i always used the baby q tips with the fat part so they can only go in a tiny bit, enough to get the stuff you can see.

Stay away from the Q Tips -
I brought my DS to an ENT for an unrelated problem. When he checked his ears he found a ton of wax build up. I could not believe what he pulled out of his ears (sorry TMI). The ENT said it was due to the use of Q Tips and advised "nothing smaller than your elbow goes in babys ears".

I use baby qtips on my kids and never had a problem. You can only go in so far with the baby qtips. I don't want my babies walking around with nasty wax in their earsChat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: at every ped visit, they clean both ears with this special tool. I tried to steal one, LOL!

ITA!! Not only is the wax protective, but a lot of the time when you use a QTIP you are actually pushing most of the wax further in

Re: Cleaning baby's ears...

Yesterday at the doctor, the ear wax inside was so bad that his ears bled when the doctor removed it.

I asked what we could do and he said NOTHING.

He told me three times NOTHING ever goes in the ears.

It makes me crazy, but he was very clear.

I was going to say this. I'm prone to ear infections, and every ENT I have seen advises against q-tips. The wax is gross, but it does much more good than harm. The q-tips can damage ear drums or scrape inner ear skin and cause infections. Stick with the washcloth, and if DCs ears get blocked, use drops to help soften the wax or ask your pediatrician to remove the wax.

Just as an aside, my mom used to clean out my ears with bobby pins - she was old school.

Re: Cleaning baby's ears...

Ears are self cleaning. The wax is there for a reason- to protect the middle and inner ear. Only wipe away what you can see from the outside.

I fight with DH ALL time over this!

Re: Cleaning baby's ears...

I'd have to agree with the above posters despite my mother's love for the bobby pin. It looks like I screwed up as Abby has had two ear infections already and I was a Q-tip user. I am sure it won't be the first "Mommy-mishap" of mine.

Re: Cleaning baby's ears...

We just use a wash on DS's ears. His ped made it very clear to NOT use anything inside his ears, not even the larger Q-tips. He's used a special tool to clean the wax out when it gets very bad. I so want to use Q-tips but won't.

The doctor did tell us there is a kit you can buy at the pharmacy which will disolve the wax with a saline type formula. The problem is DS won't let us anywhere near his ears most of the time so we've not tried it.

Re: Cleaning baby's ears...

DS won't let me touch his ears, he moves his head away or swats me with his arm. So I don't clean the ear wax until I see a glob of it-then I wait for him to fall asleep and take it off with my finger. So gross-there's so much of it.

Re: Cleaning baby's ears...

I use qtips, but do not insert them into the canal. They have safety qtips that I use but I also use the regular and just do the outer ear. There is a lot of "stuff" in there, I could not believe the dry skin, etc.

Re: Cleaning baby's ears...

i get what everyone is saying about not using q-tips, but IMO (and i am not a doctor) the baby q-tips barely go in the baby's ear - i only use them to clean just outside the ear hole, not actually IN his ear. the bulb of those big q-tips prevents them from going in any further (from what i have seen).

i don't put q-tips "in" my ear either.
