Clothing donation tax deduction question...
After 3 months, DH and I finally binned up what didn't sell at our garage sale and brought it all over to Goodwill. We got a receipt. I know that the max deduction (without appraisal, etc) is $500, but is it per person? Or can I deduct $1K since we file jointly?

I am pretty sure it's one receipt = one deduction.

Re: Clothing donation tax deduction question...
The receipt doesn't have a dollar amount on it. It just says 6 bins of clothes, 1 bin of shoes. (some mine, some DH's) If I went through it all, the fair market value would be well over $500, but less than $5000. I know that you have to fill out form 8283 section A if you are claiming more than $500 in charitable donations. But is that single or joint? I was just trying to avoid filling out the additional form (bc I think the things need appraisal). Or am I not making any sense? That's a very good possibility.
On form 8323, there's all this stuff about getting an appraisal by a qualified individual, not the donor or donee. But is that just for donations of over $5000?
We do our taxes ourselves, otherwise we would consult an accountant. I figured this might be a quickie kind of answer.
