CNN reports how sad it is that the Steubenville verdict 'ruined' the 'promising' lives of the two convicted football players....

With little mention of how the situation will impact the life of the victim:

Reading the comments below the article I agree with what one poster said...

"Their actions ruined their lives, NOT the guilty verdict."

These reporters are a disgrace to women and humanity.

wonder how the reporters would feel if it were their daughter that was drugged and raped. ****...that outrages me.

its already hard enough for women to report a rape for fear of being dragged through the mud/not believed/etc.

what the did to this girl is absolutely disgusting. maybe someone should give these 2 a taste of their own medicine in juvy.

This article confused me. What is it about? I don't see how those quotes have anything to do with the victim. I didn't read it that they were grieving for the rapists, but shaking their heads for the "what if" promising future these stupid kids would have had but they just threw away.

The quotes don't have anything to do with the victim, which is one of the points. This article is commenting on CNN's reporting of the verdict. And my problem with what CNN reported, as I believe many others agree, is that they did NOT grieve the futures these kids threw away, they grieved the futures the verdict ruined. Maybe it was semantics, but it was irresponsible reporting at best with no mention of grief for the promising future of the victim, and no reference to the fact that these kids are responsible for their own ruin....it's not the judge's or the verdict's fault that their 'promise' has been ruined - it's their own.

Well obviously they were never told you are the creator of your own destiny. Maybe if they weren't little pukes they wouldn't have to worry about their reputations and futures. Maybe they should instead think about that poor girls future and how her life will never be the same instead.

I get the point, but I don't agree with you. I think they mean "It's a shame they made this stupid decision because they had potential." I do think that kids who make stupid decision that ruin their lives is sad, but I also believe that they should suffer the consequences of their mistakes. I don't think it diminishes their sympathiy for the victim.

I kind of agree. Plus- are they allowed to talk about the reaction of the victim and her family?

Who was Richmond apologizing to? Was it her family?

Like there aren't convicted felons in the NFL...... Chat Icon

its not like they stole a loaf of bread, they raped two young women! I guess they should've thought about their actions and how it could directly effect their future, but they didn't. So now, they suffer the consequences!

ITA, plus there reactions in the following weeks after the incident did not make me think they thought "crap we screwed up"...the filth they continued to spew makes me have no sympathy for them...AT ALL.

Their tears are for themselves, because they got caught and have to pay the piper (and really, they're getting off easy). They're not crying for the way they trashed the lives of their victims.

Maybe they were trying to use this as a lesson to others...make a mistake like this, it doesn't leave you...hoping it will show others, like bystanders, it's not ok to do nothing. KWIM?

I think the language was very irresponsible. Say something like "it's unfortunate that these boys, who could have had such bright futures, ruined not only their own but that of the young lady they hurt." Instead of implying, as I really feel they did, that the judicial system and the verdict somehow ruined the boys' future without any blame on the boys themselves.

ITA.

That entire town has that mentality & it's disgusting. Why isn't the coach fired, why isn't that DA relocated or disbarred? I know it's all hearsay in the corruption aspect of this story. But, man they need to GO!

After the way the word "rape" was thrown around during the election, it's amazing to me that women would approach it from that POV. But yes, it seems like they're faulting the system and not the kids who did the crime.
