I have EXTREMELY dry skin and I use it to take off my makeup, then again as a moisturizer at night for face and body. I also use it in my hair before washing. I bought organic coconut oil from Stop n Shop. I keep it in my medicine cabinet.

I was there earlier today and spotted it in the organic aisle. I remembered this post so I picked up a jar. I'm excited to try it. My skin tends to get super itchy this time of year.

Re: Coconut oil

So I tried it on my hair for the first time.

Came out so oily and greasy I was like WTF have I done to my hair.

However, I spent a long time washing it out and this morning, it's like I grew new hair.

Even with this weather, my hair is very straight and smooth. It's usually a massive poof ball in humid weather.

For those that use it as a moisturizer on their face, does it make you break out? I heard it was good for acne but I'm a little scared to put it on my face

If I ever put this in my fine hair, I would never get an ounce of life or body out of it again.

I can't even imagine how soft and flat it would be...I'd probably have to shave my head and start over again!

Isn't coconut oil like REALLY high in cholesterol and fat?
Or am I thinking of something else?
I can't imagine it would be good to cook with if that is the case, no?

i actually eat it with a spoon right out of the jar! its one of those "good" fats - like almonds - its actually supposed to boost your metabolism. different brands taste different (imo) - if you plan on eating it you may want to go to a natural foods store and see the selection. i actually really love it on my instant quinoa. (trust me im not a "healthy eater" i just discovered it and its awesome!!)

i also use it to take off my makeup and moisturize my face & nails. you would think i was from the islands the way i love the stuff!

I was wondering the same thing re organic. The people that say it smells, is yours organic, unrefined, raw, cold pressed etc? I have the nutiva one which was pricey from whole foods and there is barely any smell, maybe a faint smell of coconut and I could eat it straight off the spoon.

The people that got it at Costco, can you post the details, brand, price. I'd love if I could get it cheaper!!

Re: Coconut oil

The brand I use has a very light hint of coconut smell to it... smells awesome, like a beach vacation lol. I love to open the lid and sniff it right out of the glass jar like it's a yankee candle lol. I forget the brand, but I get it at the health food store. The stuff is awesome.

It is an oil, but it solidifies at a certain temperature. It easily turns back to oil if you rub it in your hands or put the jar in warm water. I once left the glass jar out at room temperature on a hot day and it turned back into a liquid state. I usually keep it refrigerated, though.

Besides used in cooking, it can be used for a lot of different things... especially skincare and hair care related. I have a friend who uses it for absolutely everything. She's like the father in my big fat greek wedding with his windex addiction lol.

I got it at Costco. It's from Carrington Farms. Pure, unrefined, cold pressed coconut oil. 100% organic extra virgin. Maybe it's just me but I do not like the smell at all.

there are so many different kinds - some are so tasty others will make you gag! total trial and error but natural foods stores have a bigger selection.

i also saw a pin on teeth whitening - they say to swish a spoonful around in your mouth for 10 mins or so. i did it once but never stuck with it. maybe you can warm it before putting it in your mouth so the texture doesnt bother you? good luck!

Re: Coconut oil

I haven't noticed a really strong smell with the one I recently bought (especially after it's on).

I was in TJ's earlier and picked up another one. It smells a little sweeter than the other.

I use the trader joes one. It doesnt taste bad, if you like coconut. I have been putting it on my feet at night and sleeping with socks..also in my hair which is looking super shiny. I have thin hair and the keratin treatment and it is not making it greasy at all. I add a little bit to my smoothies too. Best if you melt it first then add.

Re: Coconut oil

I originally bought it to treat my daughters cradle cap. Worked awesome!

I tried using it as a moisturizer and while it was awesome I couldn't take the smell. I smelled like a coconut macaroon...lol. I have an organic unrefined one from Vitamin World. I think I need to try the Trader Joe's one.
