Re: Collecting Homework
I teach high school, so I don't know if my answer applies to you, but here goes:
I only collect homework the first week or two. It's just too overwhelming to keep it up, and makes so much unnecessary work for you. But the first week it's good to do because the kids will get into the habit of doing it more carefully. Have them pass it to the first person in their row after going over it, and collect it from there.
After the first week, I check the HW at their desks while they're doing a warm-up/Do Now activity. I make sure to specifically check at least one problem at every desk so I can say, "Nice work on #7" or "Check #3 again when we go over it as a class" so they know I'm reading the HW even though I'm not collecting it. I do collect HW about once a week throughout the year, when the assignment was especially interesting or work-intensive (an essay, an artsy assignment, something they had 2 days to do, etc.)
HTH!

Re: Collecting Homework
I am fourth grade. I used to use the HW Binder, where kids check their hw in each day and also check in if they DID not do it and why. (This was from Fountas and Pinnell.) They would then leave it in the appropriate bin and Id check it. This past year, I still had them but it in the bins, but did not use the book. I checked the HW on a spreadsheet and kept track that way. I was still able to see if a child was getting into a "pattern" of no HW that needed to be addressed.

Re: Collecting Homework
I had a math teacher in HS who had an ingenious plan... everyday at the start of class he would simply ask who did not do their homework. If you raised your hand, he gave you a zero. After doing that and attendance, he would then state that we were entering the "DOUBLE ZERO ZONE" He would then spot check random students in the class... if you got caught lying, you would then get a double zero... also, as we were going around giving answers to the hwk, and someone sounded suspicious, he would call them up to check them out... his system really seemed to work well.

Re: Collecting Homework
I collect it. I can only imagine the BS they would pull if I walked around to check it. eta: I do it at the beginning of class.

Re: Collecting Homework
I usually collect it. Most of the time the HS students won't bother to do it unless I collect it.
Sometimes it is questions or vocabulary and they I walk around and check and go over it immediately.

I keep hearing about the Fountas and Pinnell HW binder. Can any tell me where I can get a copy of the outline and expanation of it?
TIA

Re: Collecting Homework
I collect it at the end of every week. Some students choose to hand it in ahead of time and that is fine by me. Do I check every single question Absolutely not. Typically I choose one question and mark that. I also deduct points if the heading, assignment, and questions are not written out.
At the beginning of the year, I was collecting it everyday, but that just got too overwhelming. Once a week worked much better for me and the students (more seemed to turn it in this way)

It is in the F and P book. I have the paper at school or FM me. It's easy.
