Computer Tech. people
Hi! I need help saving my parents' computer. It seems like they have tons of viruses on the computer and I don't know where to begin to start fixing. They are getting tons of pop-ups, the internet is slow, and they are having problems starting up the computer.....etc. etc.
At this point, I think it's probably best to start over and get someone in there to get rid of the viruses and install anti-virus software. (I know there was stuff installed in there, but who knows when and if they updated it. they're a lot clueless when it comes to the computer.
My first question: 1. Who do you recommend for the job that can come to the house or a place where the hard drive could be dropped off? Also, approximate cost and time involved? I woudl like this to be as affordable as possible as my parents are on a fixed income and I just bought a house, so money is tight!
danielleandscott--- i believed you FMed me with a contact. but i can't find the FM. mind sharing again?
2. What software do you recommend for their computer in terms of anti-virus, spyware, etc? They do on-line banking and my father's pension on there so it needs to be secure for them. Also, what exactly is involved in maintaining this? I am not home a lot, so it would need to be something that autimatically updates? How do you know when you have to renew?
3. Anything else I should know?
TIA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do they have AOL? Because they have free MacAfee that you can download and it will automatically update everyday.
Also, you can go to run - msconfig - and turn off a lot of things yourself so if you do get the antivirus installed one of the viruses won't stop it from working.

Re: Computer Tech. people
Install the Windows Installer Utility Clean Up.
LINK
It's from Microsoft...
After you install it, you will be able to remove everything you want off completely.
You have to be careful though, you don't want to remove something you need.
I just did this today b/c my iTunes was all screwed up with Vista and it worked great.
