Conflicted
..and I feel so immature!!!
I need to make a life decision in the next 24 hours, and I'm stressing myself out. I'm afraid to make the wrong decision! I have the wedding, I have the place to live, now I need the new job.
Pros: *good "career" opportunity, as opposed to just a "job". *Valuable licensing and experience (paid for by the employer) that will only make me more marketable in the future *potential to eventually branch off into my own agency years down the road *profitable agency - small commission available for every policy written *Good medical coverage at no cost to me, dental offered at $40/month *Boss seems to be a really great guy - our personalities clicked. He is OK with me missing 5 days in November for my honeymoon.
Cons: *less $ than I had hoped for *further than I had hoped for (at the times I need to travel, I'm looking at 45 min - 1 hour) *GOOD MEDICAL for me, but NO spousal medical coverage available (Rich needs it - we were looking into Healthy NY)
I've put a ton of resumes out, gone on several "preliminary interviews", and no other companies are making decisions any time soon. Seriously, are interview processes usually 6 weeks long?!?

Re: Conflicted
No advice, but lots of luck!
Sometimes the interview process does take that long. Dh's current job took about 3 weeks because he had to interview with several people who couldn't meet all at once.

Re: Conflicted
reading your cons, you are so not immature.
medical ins. is very important. Can I ask why Rich isn't getting it through work?
the money thing will repay itself in the future since you will be gaining the experience and the licensing you need to make more.
BUT, if you need to pay out of pocket for Rich's health insurance, that makes the $$ thing a little harder....
have you guys found an appt yet? if you are still at home, I'd say wait it out...but if you are already paying bills and there are no prospects...you may have to bite the responsibility bullet

And my car is on the verge of death - I need a new one SOON....by April (when my next inspection is due).
I am still working at my college job, so I have income and medical coverage.

Re: Conflicted
How much less money? (don't need a number but is it an amount you can live with from a bill paying perspective?)
Can you ask them to adjust the hours you work so you could travel earlier/later and hit less traffic?
What does Rich do about insurance now? Is he already paying out of pocket?

Re: Conflicted
you are not immature! Go with your gut. The medical insurance is a big thing and can be very costly to pay out of pocket for Rich. The salary thing will definitely make up for itself in time.
Unfortunately, the interview process can be a nightmare. For one offer I got, the process was 11 weeks.
Good luck with your decision and congrats on the offer!

Re: Conflicted
I honestly would say that I would not take the job because of the cons. Spouse medical coverage can be expensive if you have to add it. The travel sucks. I used to commute to Great Neck everyday. I wouldn't be too alarmed about the pay but I would wait it out for another offer.

Will your current job pay the bills for now in your new apt? Will Rich be able to go on your current jobs health plan when you are married?

He currently has coverage through grad school (the CUNY plan), but that's almost over.
The hours are not adjustable. Those are the only hours they're open.
Lets just say that my entire salary would go towards our bills as they are NOW...not including a new car for me.

Did you already give notice at your current position? If so I would then recommend taking this if you have no other options available.

Is there room for more money in 6 months, in a year?
The health insurance is a biggie, and it is very hard to qualify for Healthy NY.
When do they need to know by?

I need to give a decision by tomorrow.
If I choose to stay at my current job, I can have 8 more weeks there.

Re: Conflicted
Oy! Is the opportunity to advance there? Is your salary already set in stone, or can you negotiate it a bit. I would say to the new employer "I'm really excited about this opportunity but in order for it to be worth it for me to make the move, I need at LEAST (insert X ammt of $$) to make it work financially for myself...

With everything said it's a tough position. I am honestly not sure what to say. If you take this job it would be very hard to interview for more positions. But if you didn't take it and stayed 8 weeks at your job then you could use some vacation or personal days to interview. I know the job market sucks and it seems like you have to put out 900 resumes in order to be called in for one stinkin interview. I am sorry I can't give more insight but it seems like you're backed into a corner right now with this decision and it sucks that you only have a short period to think about it.

For me it depends on how bad the money is and to top it all off the travel... Interviewing and obtaining opportunities also includes turning things down. Dont jump at an opportunity that clearly to me sounds like you might not be interested in.

Re: Conflicted
You say that no other companies are making any decisions now and that you can stay at your current job, if you choose, for eight more weeks. What happens at the end of the eight weeks? If you pass on this offer and, at the end of the eight weeks there aren't any other offers, what would you do? While this position may not be everything you hoped for, it may be good enough for now until something better comes along. Yes, it is less money and the travel is a little further, but, you do get medical coverage for, at least, yourself. Look at the overall picture again and add to the cons that at the end of eight more weeks at your current job, you may, very well, be unemployed. To me, that surpasses all the rest. Half full is better than nothing at all. I know that you will make the right decision for you and I wish you luck in whatever you choose.
Just wanted to add, I don't think you are immature at all. This would be a tough decision for anyone.
