I have been following this story and it is truly heartbreaking. The fact that there are animals out there like this man is just so disturbing.
I personally do not support the death penalty. But it is cases like this one that make me question my beliefs.
They said that he smiled or smirked when they announced he was getting the death penalty. It's what he wants. Personally, sitting in a windowless cell for 23 hours a day for the rest of his life seems like a better punishment.

Happy this monster will die, but I think torture or solitary confinement would have been better. The sad part is he wants to die and has been given what he wants.

So torn on this, mainly because his lawyer came out and said that he actually wanted the death penalty. I can see how it is the easy way out but then again our jail system is pretty messed up. We allow these types of ppl to have tv, gym time, 3 meals a day, and even allow them to get an education. I think it should all be based on the individual and in his case, we gave him what he wanted.. to be put to death. In his case I think he should rot! Although my idea of "rot" is a jail cell, a bed and that's pretty much it. Solitary confinement for the rest of his life. It sickens me that there are people like this in this world. My heart goes out to the family of the victims, especially the husband/father... I dont know how he ever gets out of bed

Oh... that still must suck. But there ARE high priced lawyers available for the rich killers and rapists, etc out there....

right? I would say how horrific this crime was is what brought it to the spotlight.
If I was on that jury there is NO WAY I wouldve looked at the pictures, I couldnt.
the race comment at the end is disturbing and ridiculous and need not be there nor mentioned.

We pay more than that for the death sentence.
I am so sorry for that poor family-that poor father and husband. The line about his daughter being tortured among her stuffed animals-heart wrenching
I'm against the death penalty for a number of reasons, but cases like this make my rational side go out the window. I think about my own daughter and I could take them out with my own two hands.

This happened in the same town my friend lives in. There is SO much more to this story than was made public and he got what he deserved.

Exactly. That is what they really deserve. They should SUFFER. The death penalty is the easy way out IMO.

I work next door to the court house in New Haven and I cannot even begin to tell you about the madness here in New Haven the past month or so. This was such a terrible tragedy. I am happy that justice was finally served but really feel for Mr. Petit since he has to relive all of this again in just a month or so.
On a happy note, Mr. Petit started a foundation in memory of his wife and daughters and its been extremely successful. I know you can make donations online. Its called Petit Family Foundation.

He needs to die a slow painful VERY painful death.
You know, this is an idea!!! Wouldn't it be great if animals who commit such crimes got to die the exact same way as their victims? I wonder if it would lower crime rate in this country... 'cause clearly 3 meals a day and TV time just does't quite sound all that threatening...

I have very mixed beliefs on the death penalty. I personally don't think it is my decision to decide if someone dies. however, if I was the father and husband that loss my family, I'd be in support of it. I would just never want to be on a jury deciding that.
I feel so sad for the man that lost his family! I hope once the next trial is over he is able to find some peace.

There was an article the other day about his brother and he spoke how he wanted life without parole.
Doesn't matter in the end, justice was served. 1 down 1 to go.
