Constipation in a 5 week old??
I am convinced my son is constipated. He strains and struggles to go and seems so uncomfortable. It kills me The Dr advised to do the thermometer trick but my kid must be the only child this doesn't work for. It does NOT make him go. He does have the right amount of poop diapers but still strains to go....I asked about using prune juice and the dr said not until 2 mos but I am considering doing it anyway. Does anyone have any experience or advice. Oh the Dr says this is just an immature stomach and will get better...

I would not use prune juice yet, he is just learning to push and his little belly wont know what to do with it. I would continue with the thermometer, use lots of vaseline.
Hang in there

ITA. It takes a little time for some infants to get the hang of pushing. You DS wouldn't be considered constipated, especially if he is pooping. My ped told us that my DD would be considered constipated if she hadn't had a bowel movement in 5 days. Up until then, they tell you not to worry or intervene. So if your DS is going every day you are in good shape.

Re: Constipation in a 5 week old??
Are his poops hard or soft? If he is constipated his poop will he hard and formed (like rabit pellets). DS was constipated after switching formula and we could only get him to go by using glycerine suppositories (cut one in half). They work right away for him. But it is normal for them to strain to poop, they are just learning how to go

Re: Constipation in a 5 week old??
Ava was severely constipated at that age, as was my new nephew. Both my ped. and my sister's ped. suggested about an ounce of water in between feedings all day long. It has always worked like a charm. To this day, if Ava doesn't have enough water, she gets backed up. Sometimes formula can be too efficient and the body absorbs so much of it that what's left can't make it through the body easily. Anyway, I suggest a little bit of water in between feedings.

Re: Constipation in a 5 week old??
DS never went to the bathroom every day at that age. It was every other, sometimes every 3. I felt so bad for him.
The ped. recommended I give him a little water when he gets constipated. If that doesnt work use a suppository. I used to use a 1/2, not even. He would poop within minutes. I was amazed how much he would have in there A warm bath can also sometimes loosen them up and help them go.

Thank you but I am EBF(and pumping...do you think its the same) Thanks to everyone-it just sux to see your little one so uncomfortable. This might actually help him because he is a ravenous eater as well so maybe the water would make him more comfortable

Re: Constipation in a 5 week old??
My DS has been severely constipated for the last week. We have switched the formula 2 times and are hoping that this one works better. The ped. told me I could give him 1/2 oz. of prune juice. This did help him go and he hasnt been constipated since. I was also told that I could give him about 1/2 oz. of water after each feeding. This seems to help as well. I know how awful it is to see your DC is pain. DS has been straining and really gassy and it breaks my heart. Hang in there.

I read in the la leche book that a bf baby can't get constipated. My DS is ebf, and sometimes got a bit gassy if I ate the wrong stuff. His stomach would be hard and he would cry. the older a bf baby gets, they may poop less because their body uses what you make more efficiently . BTW - huge kudos for ebf twins!!! I find it hard with one!
I would also use organic massage oil and rub his belly in a clock wise circle with both hands then gently push my two fingers on each side of his belly button (never directly on the belly button) There is also a reflex technique for the bottom of the feet to clear their intestines. start on the left heel on the bottom, go up the heel, then across it with your left thumb, then across the right heel and down with your right thumb.
