Cooking meatballs in sauce question
Do you cook your meatballs in sauce or in the oven then put in the sauce?
If you cok in the sauce, do you put them in and let them cook the whole time the sauce does? I am going to make sauce tonight or tomorrow night and let it cook a few hours. Will anything happen to the meatballs if they are in the sauce that long?

Re: Cooking meatballs in sauce question
I fry my meatballs to sear the outside then drop them in the sauce.
since i will be making my sauce the day before to use on Christmas day, I cook the sause for a while, then put it in the refrigerator until the next day. i then cook it more the next day.
Your meat balls will be fine.

Cooking them in the sauce gives sooo much flavor. I usually drop a few in the sauce raw or lightly seared depending on how much time I have to cook the sauce, then bake the rest. YUMMMM

Re: Cooking meatballs in sauce question
I was thinking of baking mine and THEN putting them in the sauce. Would that be ok?

I put meatballs in the sauce raw - it's so much easier and (imo) tastes better since the sauce flavors really gets into the meatballs. Once they go in the sauce, they don't come out until I eat them.

Ok, so my meatballs are frozen right now. If I just put them in the sauce, how long would they need to stay in there to cook and how high on the stovetop?

Re: Cooking meatballs in sauce question
My MIL fries the meatballs first and then puts them in the sauce. The sauce has already cooked maybe an hour, maybe a little less before she puts the meatballs in. It cooks with the meatballs another hour or so.

Re: Cooking meatballs in sauce question
DH prefers I cook them in the sauce.
I like to cook them in a frying pan first then in the sauce. I add the juices to the sauce, so what's the difference?

Re: Cooking meatballs in sauce question
I usually bake them and then stick them in the sauce to cook even longer and absorb the sauce flavor. I just wouldn't bake them until they're completely done if you plan to cook them in the sauce for hours.

If you just put the sauce on the stove to start cooking, it should be on low. I'd defrost the meatballs a little bit so they arent' completely frozen. They should be fine for the length of cook time for your sauce. They cook pretty quick.

Re: Cooking meatballs in sauce question
I put everything in the crockpot, even the meatballs and sausage. I don't do anything to them first just cook on low for 8 hours and it won't even need that long
