Cord Blood Banking

I just wanted to see...

Are you going to do it? Why or why not?

If you are going to do it, what company are you going with and why?

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We're doing it through Viacord. We decided to do it because even though I'm sure we will never need it should something arise it's there. It's like an insurance policy, you have it but you hope you never need it. We chose Viacord because we liked their procedures for collection and storage, the research they are doing to try and make better use of the cord blood, and we got a very good deal through them as well.

People have very mixed feelings on banking the cord blood, whether it's worth it or not, but for us we just felt better doing it.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

You may want to do a search on this board. We are banking with Viacord. 4 babies in my OB practice have been saved with their own cordblood so far. Once we heard this it wasn't an option anymore. The blood banked from this baby has a 75% chance of helping our first born and one of us. We hope it's the biggest waste of money we ever spent. Good luck with your decision...

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We are doing it and using CBR. There are many advances being made in the field and more and more uses will be found for cord blood.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

I feel like how can you not? If God forbid something happens that this could have cured, I could never forgive myself!

What kind of deal did you get if you don't mind me asking? ViaCord said $2200 for the first year and start up fees, then $125 every year after.

I signed with Viacord before they raised their prices back in March. We're paying $1900 for the initial cost of collection and then it's $125/year thereafter. Chat Icon

I saved $250 signing up with Viacord in May. They always run specials so try to wait until a special comes up. I had a $100 off coupon laying around here somewhere.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

Awesome! I think it I have a coupon for $250 off, for CBr, which quoted me about the same. I may go with them. But ViaCord lady trash talked CBr so bad, I'm worried about where to go!

Re: Cord Blood Banking

I really haven't looked into it yet, but we would like too. We didn't with ds and this is something I will discuss with my OB next week.

We're doing it with Viacord. I just figured they are learning more and more and have more uses for cord blood every day. If my baby ever has something that could be cured with cord blood...whether in the first few years or many many years down the road...it would be totally worth it. It can be stored forever, and who knows how many uses they will have for it 20-30 years from now.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

I just put a request in to see if my DH's FSA will cover the expense. I know some FSA's are indeed covering it and some insurance companies are covering the cost if the baby will be born with a disorder that needs treatment. Very interesting stuff....

I did not with Andrew and will not with this baby. If anything I want to see if Winthrop does public banking. I know Mercy didn't.

I did my own research and decided against it.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

Yeah, but the more payments you make the more you pay. Like $51 for 60 months comes out to $3060 instead of the original $2200. That's why I think I will put it on my credit card, I have an AMAZING APR on all three of my cards, so it won't hurt so bad. One of my cards is 1.99% until March 09 and when March 09 comes I just do a balance transfer back to another card I have that will give me 1.99% for however long.

Credit cards can be defeated if you know how to juggle! Chat Icon

I absolutely agree! But that's with any payment made long term. It just can be more affordable spread out longer for some people. I am putting it on a low APR credit card as well. I am hoping my DH's FSA picks it up though Chat Icon

Not doing it. Too expensive. We are donating to the national bank so at least SOMEONE can benefit from it.

It is but some hospitals don't have this option. Mercy didn't but I am hoping that Winthrop does.
