DD#1...

Active but didnt exercise at all before or during the pregnancy. In fact I was on bedrest for the last 4 weeks. Contractions started at noon and she was born at 6:43pm. Pushed 1/2 hour

DDs #2 & #3

Same status on exercise. I was on bedrest for 3 months. Contractions started at 3am. Started pushing at 5:40am. DD #2 was born at 6:16am and DD#3 was born at 6:23am

DS..

Was probably less active then before previous pregnancies. (change in careers where I wasnt on my feet at all) No bedrest though and was up and around the whole pregnancy. I was induced with him. Water was broken at 1:30pm and Pitocin started. Started pushing at 4:30pm and he was born at 5:02

Re: Correlation between regular exercise and length of labor... Give your two cents :-)

Exercised almost every day...in fact, went to the gym the night before I went to the hospital.
They had to induce me b/c they were worried about pre-eclampsyia (high blood pressure, protein in urine). DS was not coming out so c/s.
However, my recovery was really, really quick. My friends, family and doctors couldn't believe how quick i was up and about, and I firmly believe it was b/c of the exercise.

Re: Correlation between regular exercise and length of labor... Give your two cents :-)

I exercised like a mad woman when I was pregnant.

I was induced 2 weeks early due to a blood disorder I have. I wasn't even effaced or dilated when I was induced.

I was in labor under 7 hours.

I pushed for 10 minutes and out came my son.

Overall, I definitely think working out helps speed everything along.

My doctor told me he knew I would be a good "pusher" once I told him I was an avid runner.

I did not exercise during my pregnancy per se, but I was very active, I walked a lot and I worked up until a few days before I gave birth.

My labor, from the moment my water broke until I gave birth was 9 hours and 15 minutes.

I pushed for about an hour.

You see, for me it was the opposite...the labor was horrendous even with the epidural...I could have pushed for hours if I had to.

I would say I did exercise regularly while pregnant, though it was all much more toned down from my usual routine. I walked about 45 minutes each day sometimes more, took prenatal yoga, and swam during the summer months.

I was in labor for more than 22 hours, so I don't see a correlation really. Pushing went a little over an hour.

ETS- I'm not sure that excersising determines labor length, but I do believe that regular excersise will help you recouperate faster. I was back at work teaching dance after only 3 weeks.

Did you exercise while you were pregnant?
for most of my pregnancy

How long was labor for you in total?
from the time I was induced to the time I pushed - 20 hours, but 6-7 hours in what my OB described as "active labor"

For how long did you push?
1 hour, 15 minutes

I do think the exercising helped, not necessarily with time, but just helped. My doctor didn't even want me to try this. She wanted me to elect to have a C-section, but I said I wanted to try, and in the end, I progressed well, and pushed well, and the delivery went perfectly. The girl in my room was much more fit and she seemed completely back to normal within 24 hours of giving birth.

I think there is a correlation between working out and how well you can handle labor.

Having 2 babies (one totally natural), I could tell you I was wishing that I had worked out more since I feel like it would have added to my endurance and strong muscle in your stomach def helps with pushing

Re: Correlation between regular exercise and length of labor... Give your two cents :-)

I worked out til almost the end.

My water broke and then I didn't start contracting so they induced me and it took forever to get things moving. I was in the hospital for three days, I don't even remember when I started contracting and then had three hours of pushing.

I don't think exercise helped me with this labor.

Re: Correlation between regular exercise and length of labor... Give your two cents :-)

I RARELY exercise, never have so
I don't believe it for a second!! Both of my DSs came very quickly. #1 went into hospital at 4:30 and he was out at 7:54 - #2 went in at 10pm and he was out at 1:20am...........both with about 20 minutes of pushing.

i think in my case, it def helped.

Did you exercise while you were pregnant? only took up lots of walking in my third tri.

How long was labor for you in total? i was induced at 7pm w cervadil, pitocin in at 9am, DD was born at 3pm...so i dunno where you wanna start counting but i begin when i felt my first contraction at 3am so 12 hrs total?

For how long did you push? i was given the green light at noon, so 3 hrs. seriously though it felt like 5 min.

Thank you for ALL of your posts!!!

So I'm seeing that there really is NO correlation between exercise and labor/delivery. I was secretly hoping there was a correlation to kick my asss back into gear with a regular exercise routine... lol!!! Well, I guess if we could make labor/delivery easier just by exercising, then EVERYONE would be doing it, right? Who wouldn't want labor to be easier than it really is?

Verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry interesting!!!

Re: Correlation between regular exercise and length of labor... Give your two cents :-)

My friend started to exercise a year before she started to TTC. She got pregnant right away (which she doesn't really correlate to the exercise). She continued to exercise but not strenuously. She needed to have a C-section but her recovery was the fastest I have ever heard of!!!!!! Just one experience but she believes that the exercise helped the recovery.
