Cost of treatment
First off, sorry this is so long but I could really use some advice. DH are onto a RE now. We have our first appt with the RE next week. When they called me this morning I asked about paying out of pocket for IUI as we have a lifetime max of $10,000 thru our ins for all infertility treatments and once it's gone, it's gone.
NUMEROUS people (including my own ob/gyn) have told me that it may be beneficial to pay for the IUI procudures out of our own pocket b/c they are less expensive than other treatments. My ob/gyn and friends who have gone thru IUI have said that it's only a couple of hundred dollars (anywhere between $150-$300). When I just asked the billing office at the RE about this, she was shocked and said that the cost of it was more like $3000 to $5000 for IUI!!!
If that is the case, it completely changes our options for what we want to do first (meaning start with IUI or start with something with better success rates). Many people have also told me that IF treatment are a competitive market and to "shop around". I'm just totally lost at this point.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Especially if you've had a similar experience where you paid for it out of pocket, specificially the IUI. And if you did, could you tell me who you went to and a possible price range for it? I completely understand about not wanting to share financial info on here so please feel free to FM if you want. TIA!

Re: Cost of treatment
IUIs don't cost thousands. The most it could be is $600. If you use injectible meds it could be high but that's for the meds.
I look at it this way. Either way you pay out of pocket for whatever you need after the 10K. Self pay prices are lower than insurance prices all around.
The main thing is to sit down with your doc and decide what you should do and then make a plan.
Good luck.

Re: Cost of treatment
i think you got it wrong. your $10K limit should NOT include IUIs. In other words, REs are biiling IUIs outside of your $10K, therefore leaving $10K for IVF, if needed.
I specifically asked my RE's billing person about it. Please check with them again. They SHOULD NOT bill IUIs to your $10K.
good luck!

this is not true. it completely depends on the insurance. mine has a $30k lifetime max for ANYTHING billed as inferility. so it doesnt matter if its IUI or IVF, its all under the same limit.
what you can do is ask the RE's office to bill whatever they can under another code. for me, I have PCOS so they bill EVERYTHING under PCOS except the actual IVF that i did (we didnt do IUI). so i had my fulll $30k available for IVF. for you they should be able to bill the monitoring under something else and just the actual IUI under infertility.
also if they quoted $3k that def includes all of the monitoring appts and the meds. meds under your plan are prob covered differently. i would def look into that.
good luck!

Re: Cost of treatment
Maybe they quoted you IUI including meds? A lot of insurance companies don't count IUI procedures toward your fertility benefit. You should double check with your insurance carrier. Also, doing IUI or IVF really depends on what your fertility diagnosis is. For me, I would be wasting time and money with IUI since my chances are pretty low to begin with.
FM me if you have questions.

Sounds like my insurance and I think that IUI are not included but the IVF is. The IUI didnt cost that much , maybe that is what they bill the insurance company for because they dont get paid that much. Maybe speak to the financial person at the place you are going and they can break it down for you
Good luck

Re: Cost of treatment
Thank you all for your responses. Unfortunately, I am 100% sure that IUI is under the $10000 umbrella with IF treatments with my insurance so I have to play it very safe. I'm also going to make an appt at another RE as I've gotten a lot of advice to shop around. But I will def be talking with the financial people at each place we go to see what can be done!
