Could you ever go on a reality show and leave your child?

I was watching biggest loser and watched so many parents go home to babies and toddlers etc... They were away for like 4 months. While I clearly understand that they do it for themselves so they can be healthier etc... Everytime I see them on the phone or see them in person it breaks my heart. I also saw this on survivor this week. I would feel so depressed without Gilly for months. Could you do it? Even if you feel you couldnt also answer how or why you think someone else could? I dont think there is a right or wrong...I just couldnt...I'd be broken up.

Re: Could you ever go on a reality show and leave your child?

I have to say i PERSONALY know the twins very well on the biggest loser.. they are from freeport and jim is a cop there and a very close friend while he and his brother both couldnt loose that weight.. they needed to do this like this. If i was in there place yes i think i would have done that too. the tv really doesnt give them justice in there before and after pics!

so in answer to your question.. yes i would do it if it was absoulutly necessary.. and yes i would miss my kids soooo freakin much. but if it was to make my life better for them.. yup im all over it!Chat Icon

Re: Could you ever go on a reality show and leave your child?

plain and simple, no

but I suppose for other people if there wase some burning issue that they had a once in a lifetime chance to resolve, or explore, that they can justify it. Peronally I can't think of anything that would qualify for me

Re: Could you ever go on a reality show and leave your child?

Yes, esp like the Biggest Loser.

I almost want to send someone I know there...who is in need of help and enough where their health is at stake.

SO if it meant 4 months without my kids to get better..absolutely! I would have the rest of my life to be there with them

Could you do it at this stage in your babies life? I mean you will miss the babies milestones or would you wait?

If my health was at risk, you bet I would. I would rather miss 4 months of my child's life to get healthy than 20+years because of passing young.

If my health was at rsik, then yes,I woudl miss my little angel something awful, but I would have the rest of my life to be with him, but if you don't do it, you may not live long enough to see the later milestones, like marriage and grandchildren.

Re: Could you ever go on a reality show and leave your child?

Personally I couldn't- I can't even miss one night of putting Matty to bed to go out for coffee with a friend- but that's MY weird issue. I would never judge someone who did- especially if they were trying to take control of a health problem.

Re: Could you ever go on a reality show and leave your child?

For Survivor or Amazing Race or any of those shows that are for pure entertainment, I'd say no. But if I was severly overweight, with no success in the past tyring to get heatlhy, then I would consider a show like the biggest loser. In the end 4 months away from my children would be worth living 20 extra years when they are older if they show helped me to become heathly and inturn a better parent.

I think the Biggest Loser is different from the rest.

Many of them are so obese they are staring chronic health problems and premature death in the face.

Several of them say they can't play with their kids, they have loved ones (including their own parents) die early and leave others behind.

I have a cousin who was morbidly oebse. She was on so much insulin for her diabetes that her doc said she was already on the max dose. She's been overweight her entire life.

She never married but did adopt a little boy from Guatemala a few years ago. Two summers ago, after decades of trying to lose weight, she underwent gastric bypass. She had a very difficult recovery and her son (age 4) went through pretty serious separation anxiety (keep in mind he was brought to this country at age 2 so not having mommy every second was incredibly traumatic for him) as his mom recovered for several weeks. He had sleeping issues, etc. but it was necessary in the long run.

It was not easy for either of them but it literally SAVED her life. Her docs said she would most likely die before her son completed elementary school, within ten years and around her 50th birthday.

As for the other shows, Survivor, etc, JMO, but I think they are pointless.

Yes if it was a matter of life and death most likely but for something silly like Survivor absolutely not!

Re: Could you ever go on a reality show and leave your child?

I absolutely agree after a few of you mentioned that Biggest loser is different then survivor etc...

With that said, even if you were morbidly obese you wouldnt have to go on Biggest loser to make it work, would you? I mean you can have gastric bypass, or hire a personal trainer etc...which still allows you to lose weight and be home with the children i guess, right?

Off topic for a sec...I heard they do weird stuff that isnt normall done for these LARGE results on the scale...laxatives, waterpills, etc...
Is this true? Just wondering if its really the healthy way to go...but Kudos bc they all looked AMAZING!

I could not do it. I had a very hard time when I was hospitalized back in June and that was only 4 nights.
I don't think I could go through with it.

Re: Could you ever go on a reality show and leave your child?

Not while DS is this young. Maybe if he were older I might feel differently, but I feel like he has so much going on right now...so many milestones...I could not leave him now if given an option.
