In the article, it said the family opened the doors and invited the press in, so the world could see what was done to this poor little girl.

Does it disgust us? Yes.

Does it makes us think? I hope so.

Will it help prevent more abuse, encouraging either family, neighbors, or school admin. stepping in instead of being afraid to take a stand? I sure as he l l hpe so.

Then, it would be worth it.

I don't think having a little girl in a casket was needed for the above to happen.

Most people at this point knew the story. And i just feel that they could have had a picture of HER, kinda like the pics they have been showing on tv for the past few days....NOT one of her in a casket.

I personally only thought of how callous Newsday was, when i saw that picture.

I don't think we need to see dead bodies to think.

I don't know if I agree with the cover or not, I didn't see it.

However, if this kind of "shock" helps people become more concerned and actually start doing something, then it would be worth it. I think with all the images we are exposed to, we get a bit desensitizing and need to be "shocked" to start doing something about things like abuse. The family and neighbors knew what was going on but did NOTHING. Maybe there is some little girl getting help now because someone was appauled and shocked by what the newspapers printed.

Some people do though - and if showing a picture like that is going to get something done about such terrible abuse, then I think it's necessary to go for the shock value and publish the gruesome pictures. JMO

I think video taping the funeral and the family in mourning and broadcasting it on tv would be too much....

it's a tough situation and there are no real good answers because it should never have happened in the first place....

I agree with you Red... to a certain point. It's one thing to invite the media to the funeral to have pictures taken, but it's another to put it on the cover for everyone to see. When my dad died (when I was almost 4), my mom couldn't attend the funeral (bad car accident, that resulted in his death), and asked for pictures to be taken. It was a personal request that I have grown to hold near... I was too young to remember the funeral, and the pictures put things into perspective for me.

The drawn line? It should have been posted ONLY on the internet. I went to the site, and they had a warning saying that some pictures might be offensive, and that was respectful. Having it plain view for everyone to see, regardless if they wanted to or not, was not.

I definitely agree. People go to wakes to perserve those images in their memory. If we wanted to see Nixmary in that coffin, we would have gone to the East Village, right? It was definitely uncalled for for the Newsday to put those pics on the cover. A quick link to the wake photos should have been provided in the article instead.

I may be in the minority here but THE STORY of this poor little girl affected me the most. I can't believe that this girl was consistently missing from school, had black eyes and what none of her neighbors or teachers was willing to step out of their comfort zones to help her. I am absolutely disgusted at the thought of this idiot monster of a mother who held her little girl and watched her pass out with BLOOD ALL OVER THE BACK OF HER HEAD as she said "don't leave me Mommy" and proceeded to leave her in her room where she died all alone for eating a YOGURT!!!! And what is the excuse for this disgusting piece of trash to stay with this man that beat her children over the years, "because I love him" Screw you lady! As you can see I am very fired up over this and am sick of hearing of all these babies being killed and abused by the people who are supposed to protect them and/or their love interests. I say good it was on the front page of the Newsday. Maybe people will wake up and start protecting our youngest citizens! Fire away if you must!

I agreed with your statement so much. Like you, I was repulsed, sad, and horrified of this story. Sad part of it, there are millions of children that undergo the same abuse or worst from those that supposedly should protect and love them. It makes sad as well for those that are dying to have children and will give them a good life but cannot because they are infertile etc.....and yet these people have children and instead of cherishing them and giving them a good life, they do the total opposite.
I believe that the mother might have been abused as well but she put the interests of being a woman first before being a mother. I also think that somehow there must have been drug usage for this horrific couple.
Many had mentioned how a picture of an abused girl in a casket is way out of line....you know what....I don't find anything wrong with it personally. I hope that her story in the midst of all the horror, abuse, and despair will have something good to come out of it. Let her troubled short life bring awareness to everyone so that perhaps one more child out there still suffering can be spared from such misfortune. Let that be chance for many parents to approach their children and let them know about abuse. How they should be bringing awareness for their children as they are in other settings.
Let her story give courage to many abused women to get out of their horrible situation and find the courage to leave.
Sometimes instead of printing millions of words, a picture can sometimes convey a lot more and give a better message as unfortunate as the circumstances might be.

Re: Cover of Newsday

The news was actually IN the funeral home filming her wake & they did show her in the coffin. I would NEVER allow this myself. but, I guess the "family" (if you can call them that Chat Icon ) let them in.

I used to work in foster care law and I have a friend who worked at the Manhattan DA at the SVU. Its amazing how common these kinds of situations are. There are so many children who die every year at the hands of their parents. I wonder what made this one make such news, when this happens so often. Chat Icon

At least this issue is getting some awareness today. Hopefully the awareness will continue.

The cover of the Suffolk edition of the paper didnt have her on the cover but the pics are on their website.

The family asked them to come and take the pictures.

Yes it did.
I bought the suffolk paper

No, mine didnt. It had pics from the Golden Globe awards. I get the paper delivered every morning and read it on the train - trust me, I would have noticed a casket photo Chat Icon

The Daily News also had the picture of the funeral.

The NYP had a picture of Eva Longoria on one half, and the other half, Nixmary's picture. I think that was pretty tacky too.

I found a picture of the image, but I don't want to post it here. Eva Longoria's arm is actually hitting the otehr article.
