While it is awful that so many animals were killed, I am not surprised that they were not able to use non deadly force. This was not a zoo and from my understanding, this town is not equipped to put down animals weighing hundreds of pounds (especially not in large numbers). The article states that they tried to tranquilize a tiger but he flipped out when shot and started charging at the shooter and need to be put down. Unfortunately in a situation like this people come first. This was a neighborhood with children and the situation need to be taken under control as fast as possible. The article even quotes Jack Hanna (famous animal handler) that you can't tranquilize an animal at night - its hard enough to do it during the day.
Terrible tragedy all around.

I saw that. It makes me SO sad!! I don't know why the ONLY option was to kill all of them. Beautiful lions and bengal tigers..............all put down. It's awful!

This man is a loser. No matter what you want to kill yourself fine. But when you own that many animals you make arrangements for them. Or you leave them where they are.
I feel awful for the animals. What a awful situation for the cops too. I am sure they would not wanted to murder 50 exotic animals but were left with little choice in order to keep their citizens safe.

I'm watching this on the news now and apparently they tried to tranquilize one tiger but it didn't take effect and only got the tiger upset and lunging at the police...
They only had 4 tranquilers but close to 50 animals to contain. Nighttime was only 30 minutes away and they were afraid if they don't take action the animals would scatter.
Much as I hate to see these innocent exotic animals killed, I think they did what they had to for the safety of the general public.

I was screaming at my radio that they are hillbillies just looking for an excuse to kill these animals.
They said they had been having "issues" with this guy for years with numerous counts of abuse and neglect. IMO if that were true he would have been shut down and the animals taken away.
It seems odd that he would open all the cages and kill himself with no explicable reason. Call me a conspiracy theorist but it just doesn't add up. People disgust me

I feel so sorry that these animals had to be killed, my heart breaks over it.
I truly hope that other nonlethal methods were attempted before killing these innocent creatures, but I seriously doubt it. I understand if a cop is getting charged by a tiger the need to shoot it because it would kill a human being, but I heard that some of the animals were killed on sight when they weren't threatening anyone.
The real problem is that there are lax laws in Ohio that allow people to own these animals. If this man was not allowed to keep them in the first place this situation would have never occured. Whats to say something like this wouldn't happen again?

so incredibly sad.
and overall frustrating that gates were just left open.
and after reading that whole article... it's apparent that the animal laws are too lax in Ohio. he was arrested for animal cruelty, had mental issues, guns, and tons of dangerous wild animals.

This whole story is insane. I heard on the radio that there are exotic animal auctions in ohio. Dumb azz mf's. This was bound to happen, and who knows how many more places there are like this.
Even jack hanna said police had no choice. Can you imagine how heartbroken he is? I also think the cops had to shoot to kill. Hanna said it on gma.
My soul ached at the picture of the animals that were killed. Stupid humans strike again

I worked at a zoo upstate when I was in college and this situation was always our worst nightmare. If ever a "hot" (ie dangerous) animal escaped its enclosure, we had an obligation to notify the local law enforcement and their instructions were shoot to kill. We as caretakers had a HUGE responsibility not only for the safety of our animals but for the safety of our neighbors as well.
Plus, I've been in situations where we had to tranquilize large mammals (not a tiger but mountain goats) and it took a team of at least three to do it safely (one to shoot the tranquilizer gun, one to record observations/dosing/timing, and at least another to contain/observe the animal). We always planned the tranquilizing several days in advance and it was always done at a certain time of day --- I can't imagine the local law enforcement teams were prepared to handle this situation.
Hopefully new laws will be put in place to address these circumstances so this terrible ordeal can be avoided in the future. So sad for the animals -- guy seems like he wasn't very stable.

What an awful tragedy. What this man did was terrible and so completely selfish. Clearly he did not care about these animals at all.
I think the bigger question here should be why this man was even allowed to have these animals. I don't care if it was called a 'wildlife preserve' or not. All it took was one bad day for this nut job to single handedly put a whole town in danger and to cause the death of so many rare and exotic animals.

I think your assessment of Ohioans as "hillbilllies" is inflammatory, to say the least.
My mom moved to Ohio last year. She is far from a hillbilly. She does regulatory affairs for one of the many major medical device manufacturers in Ohio. We went to visit a few weeks ago and went to a fall festival out there. Those "hillbillies" are some of the nicest people I've ever met. Their "hillbilly" children were polite and well behaved, which is more than I can say for many kids here.
They've been trying for YEARS to get this guy's animals, even before the abuse and neglect charges. They even tried while the guy was in prison for the last year. He had threatened at one point in the past to let all the animals go.
They report that he was financially strained from caring for the animals and was going through marriage problems, he also was recently released from prison. It's my understanding that he wasn't running a zoo, he was a hobbyist or something.
For a man who supposedly loved his animals so much, he doomed them when he set them free. The only person to blame is Thomspon.
ETA: Do you think if the lions, tigers, bears and gorillas escape from the Bronx Zoo that NYPD won't shoot to kill if the animal can't be contained?
