I was screaming at my radio that they are hillbillies just looking for an excuse to kill these animals.
They said they had been having "issues" with this guy for years with numerous counts of abuse and neglect. IMO if that were true he would have been shut down and the animals taken away.
It seems odd that he would open all the cages and kill himself with no explicable reason. Call me a conspiracy theorist but it just doesn't add up. People disgust me 
OK - my friend is from this town and it's a very civilized place. It's not far from Columbus.
Ohio has very lax rules on what kind of animals you can own so legally - this person was legally allowed to have these animals. As mentioned above, Ohio also has auctions where you can buy them.
When he freed the animals before he killed himself, the news said he also damaged many of the cage locks so there was no place to contain these large, extremely dangerous, animals.

This is absolutely disgusting.
"The guy was depressed and he loved the animals that much, maybe," Hanna said.
And NO, he didn't love them that much. The article says they were living in filth, he tortured bison, digusting. How does a man like that come to own a wild animal preserve?
And I hope they find the hepatitis monkey REAL soon before anyone gets hurt!

Seriously? 
Having family in Ohio I'm finding this to be extremely offensive. I've been there several times and find many of the people there to have a lot more class than I see around here on a daily basis.

My knee-jerk reaction was that there HAD to be a better way than to kill the animals too... but from every single article and newstory it became clear that they really had no choice.
I don't think anyone involved went out with the intent to slaughter the animals.
I also think everyone's reactions would be different if this was happening in your backyard. Magnificent or not, they were a threat to everyone.

There were two. One was eaten by a lion, but there was another that is still missing and is Hepatitis B positive.

I saw this on the news last night and I feel so terrible for those animals but I definitely think that the police did what was necessary. I never want to see an animal killed but Thompson put those poor things in a situation where there was nothing else that could have been done.
There need to be stricter laws regarding keeping these types of animals in captivity. Its not fair to the animals and it's a scary thought that Thompson was so easily able to obtain them.

This made me really sad too. Poor animals, they never should have been in captivity in the first place.

This response, to me, sounds like you didn't watch the clip attached to the OP.
I recommend you watch it.
These deputies were not happy about what they had to do. There were over 50 wild animals set loose on the public at large, the same public those very deputies were sworn in to protect.
These are guys who grew up on farms, some of them, animal lovers themselves, but they had a job to do and people to protect.
One of the deputies, when interviewed, went so far as to say he, in part, blames the state of OH for having such lenient laws on owning exotics and he's right.
If you want to call anyone names, it's the POS that owned these animals, who kept them captive, abused and neglected them. HE'S the evil doer, HE was the root of this whole mess.
I understand your outrage over the situation, but I think your emotion is a bit misguided here...

Yeah, Ohioans are just a bunch of f*cking hillbillies. Read on about how the "hillbillies" HAD to handle the situation.
After a harrowing night and day spent hunting escaped bears, lions, tigers and other dangerous animals, authorities in Muskingum County, Ohio, believe they have killed, captured or otherwise accounted for 56 animals that were freed Tuesday from a private reserve by a man who it's believed then killed himself.
The last animal thought to have been on the loose, a monkey, was likely killed and eaten by one of the big cats, local Sheriff Matt Lutz told reporters last evening, local NBC4i News reports.
As we reported late Wednesday, deputies shot and killed 49 animals. Six — a grizzly bear, three leopards and two monkeys — were captured and taken to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
There's no word yet on why the farm's owner, Terry Thompson, apparently let the animals out and then shot himself.
"We don't know why Terry did this," Lutz said Wednesday, according to the local Zanesville Times Recorder.
The sheriff added that his deputies are upset about having to kill so many of the animals, but believe they did what they had to do.
"Our first concern is public safety," Lutz said, the Times Recorder reports. "My officers took absolutely no pleasure in shooting the animals. They have to go home to their wives and children and explain why they shot a Bengal tiger or a bear."
Deputy Jonathan Merry told the newspaper that at one point, a black bear came at him. "I got out of my car, and it instantly came charging at me," Merry said. "I shot it when it was about seven feet away from me."
"It was scary out there in the dark knowing those animals were roaming around," Deputy Todd Kanavel told the Times Recorder. "But what's scarier is the thought that one of those big cats or bears could get hold of a child. We're all upset about this. It's not a happy situation at all."
The sheriff's decision to have his deputies shoot to kill, he said at news conferences Wednesday, was based on his conclusion that there was no alternative — deputies do not carry tranquilizers, aren't trained to subdue animals with them and were faced with the prospect of dozens of dangerous animals getting into areas where people live.
The Washington Post writes this morning that:
"Experts and animal rights groups said the scary scene in Ohio was a direct consequence of the wide availability of exotic animals, many of which are now bred in the United States.
" 'You can find absolutely any animal on the planet for sale in the U.S.," said Bryan Christy, author of the 2009 book The Lizard King, an exposéof wildlife trafficking. 'People who keep these large carnivores, it's the same thing as keeping a loaded gun. That we allow people to keep bears and lions and tigers on their property is outrageous.' "
The Columbus Dispatch says that Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) "and his aides spent much of yesterday explaining why he allowed an executive order to lapse that could have forced Terry W. Thompson to give up his private menagerie. ... 'This is unbelievable that this even existed,' [Kasich said], 'and what's hard for me to understand is why Ohio over time didn't deal with this, but we'll deal with it now.' "

I think your assessment of Ohioans as "hillbilllies" is inflammatory, to say the least.
My mom moved to Ohio last year. She is far from a hillbilly. She does regulatory affairs for one of the many major medical device manufacturers in Ohio. We went to visit a few weeks ago and went to a fall festival out there. Those "hillbillies" are some of the nicest people I've ever met. Their "hillbilly" children were polite and well behaved, which is more than I can say for many kids here.
They've been trying for YEARS to get this guy's animals, even before the abuse and neglect charges. They even tried while the guy was in prison for the last year. He had threatened at one point in the past to let all the animals go.
They report that he was financially strained from caring for the animals and was going through marriage problems, he also was recently released from prison. It's my understanding that he wasn't running a zoo, he was a hobbyist or something.
For a man who supposedly loved his animals so much, he doomed them when he set them free. The only person to blame is Thomspon.
ETA: Do you think if the lions, tigers, bears and gorillas escape from the Bronx Zoo that NYPD won't shoot to kill if the animal can't be contained?
Agreed and personally if a lion was released in my backyard...I would want it gone. Anyway necessary

I've got to say, I'm amazed at some of the responses on this thread. Is it terrible that animals had to be killed, yes. Isn't it better then children getting killed???? If these animals had gotten into suburbs and populated areas, it would have been a different kind of massacre. These are wild animals capable of killing a grown man without a 2nd thought. Human life has to take priority, no?
