Re: Credit or Debit?

i was advised to not use the bank card as either, because if someone walks away with those numbers and uses your card, theres no way of getting the money back, whereas an actual credit card company will dispute the charges; its like having them take cash out of your wallet.

however, i still use the bank card as credit. something about punching in a pin # freaks me out

You are right about not using the bank card. But if you have fraudulant charges against your debit card you shouldn't be responsible for them.

It makes absolutely ZERO sense to use a debit card for anything. ZERO sense.

You should always use a credit card. Way better protection. And when you use a credit card you get rewards. I get 1.25% cash back on my credit card for everyday purchases and 5% cash back for gas. This adds up!

If you are one of those people that say "well I prefer to pay cash... don't like using credit cards"... this is a poor reason. If you don't feel comfortable with running up a credit card bill, do what I do.

If I go out and make a $85 dollar purchase on my credit card, when I get home I immediately make a bill payment to the credit card for that amount. Granted every month I typically have over 20+ payments applied, but every month I have a zero balance and my rewards get credited.

The debit card should have one use, at an ATM to get cash or make a deposit.

I go to the bank and take cash, if I don't have cash available then there is no reason to purchase stuff. The only thing I use a card for is gasoline and it is attached to my bank account in NY, so it is pretty much like using cash.

If you don't mind my asking, which card has 5% back for gas, I didn't know that existed.

At my bank I was told to use credit for EVERYTHING (except withdrawls at the ATM). She said our debit card used as credit carries the same benefits as a credit card as far as warranty goes, and something about extending the warranty on electronics... Chat Icon My bank just recently switched over to a new bank and this was the new bank that told me it- but I don't have a new bank debit mastercard yet, I still have my old bank's card but supposedly it works the same... HTH!

I use my debit card way more than a credit card. if I have the $ in checking, I would rather just pay for it now rather than later.

You are - as you know - 100% correct. But as pathetic as this is going to sound - that is just too much work for me! Chat Icon

For me it is too easy to get carried away with credit.. thinking that I have enough leeway for this or that. When I have my debit card I am much more cognizant of what I am spending and how much I have to spend.

I should probably do as you do - but I am mentally lazy.Chat Icon

Credit.

I can keep track of spending, get money back or rewards points, and I can float the money (meaning it stays in my account earning interest until the bill is due).

ITA! My bank charges a fee everytime you use it as debit. As credit, we get "rewards" or "Points" which is usually some extra money in our account.

this couldnt be more wrong! I work in a bank - you can absolutely 100% dispute a debit charge. Its called Regulation E!

and you could always use your debit card as a credit card and sign for it like the other poster said.

Re: Credit or Debit?

I recently had a client at work whose home health aide had been stealing $$$ out of his checking account with his debit card for quite awhile to pay her bills. He disputed the charges and got all the $$$ credited right back to his account.

The only thing we are having a hard time with, is the actual ATM withdrawls.......that's because it's his word against hers because he admitted to the cops he gave her his pin #.

Honestly I can log into my bank's bill payer, pay my CC, and log off in under 60 seconds. Plus I usually wait until I have 2 or 3 items at a time before I log in.

To the lady that asked about the 5% on gas, I have an out of state credit union that gives me 5% on gas and 1.25% on everything else. But there are other cards with major banks that will give you 5% on gas. You have to shop around.

Re: Credit or Debit?

I use Debit. It is easy and I know I won't get carried away like I could with a credit card. My bank doesn't charge anything for using it as a debit card and they do return the money if there are mistaken charges on there.

I use CC's that give me 1-5% back. (the Amex and Discover give cash back on gas and that is HUGE). If I am not using a CC I use cash

Re: Credit or Debit?

well since I have my own business and every expense is a right off it makes perfect sense for me to use my bank card and as debit. I have had fraudelent charges on my debit card and received every single penny back so you do get your money back at least with commerce.
I havent used a CC in over 2 years, do I have them yes, but if I use them I cant write it off as quickly as I can with a debit business account.
