i was advised to not use the bank card as either, because if someone walks away with those numbers and uses your card, theres no way of getting the money back, whereas an actual credit card company will dispute the charges; its like having them take cash out of your wallet.

however, i still use the bank card as credit. something about punching in a pin # freaks me out

You are right about not using the bank card. But if you have fraudulant charges against your debit card you shouldn't be responsible for them.

It makes absolutely ZERO sense to use a debit card for anything. ZERO sense.

The debit card should have one use, at an ATM to get cash or make a deposit.

this couldnt be more wrong! I work in a bank - you can absolutely 100% dispute a debit charge. Its called Regulation E!

and you could always use your debit card as a credit card and sign for it like the other poster said.

I was just going to write the same thing. If your debit card has a visa or mc logo, you are 100% backed by them just as you are with a regular credit card.

Not everyone has or can get approved for great credit cards where they have those rewards.

Re: Credit or Debit?

i never EVER use debit. not a single time.

i charge. i get cash back and i know i will have the money. if i had to record all my debit transactions i would never be able to do it.

Re: Credit or Debit?

I guess Credit- but it's Amex- which is a charge card since it has to be paid in full every month

it's better then cash to me- I get tons of points, protection, and a year end summary of what I spent and where I spent it which is great for taxes!

I never said you couldn't dispute a charge against your debit card. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I hope you were just referring to the poster above me and mistakenly quoted my post.

I said you shouldn't be responsible for them.

The problem of disputing charges on a debit card lies in the fact that a fradulant charge immediately pulls from a LIQUID account. While you would get this money back, some banks have more lengthy processes regarding disputes on debit accounts. Some won't issue adjustments on your balance until they do an investigation.

If you have a fradulant charge on a credit card, any decent credit company will simply issue a temporary balance adjustment on the charge while the investigation is pending. This is obviously a better situation for the banker.

I still don't know why anybody would want to use a debit card over a credit card that provides rewards.

People are complaining left and right about the price of gas. Here's a good example:

One gas station has gas for $3.95 a gallon. The gas station next to it has gas for $3.76. Which one are you getting your gas at? I guarantee if this was a real life scenario the line for the $3.76 would be down the block while the $3.95 station would be empty.

Like someone else said earlier in the thread..because not everyone qualifies for a rewards card. Some people can't be trusted with credit cards. I work for a BK lawyer so I've seen it first hand.

We use credit for everything due to the rewards/cash back. Pay it off at the end of the month and you get paid for using it.Chat Icon
