Crockpot mac 'n cheese

Has anyone ever made this? If you did, did you cook the pasta before putting it in, or did you let the pasta cook in the Crockpot?

The directions I have say to cook it first...I feel like cooked pasta is going to get weird sitting in a Crockpot for hours upon end.... on the other hand, I feel like if I add enough water to actually cook the pasta, the cheese is going to be watery and weird.

I know this isn't helpful at all, but mac & cheese is SO easy to make from scratch that I don't think a crockpot is necessary at all - KWIM?

Do you need a good mac & cheese recipe? I'm happy to share how I make mine :)

The cheese sauce is literally ready before the pasta has even cooked! So it only takes as long as the pasta you're cooking Chat Icon

i agree, and the only kind i've had from the crockpot has eggs in it, which makes it a heavier dish so I'm not that crazy about it.

Thanks for the offer, and I'd love to see your recipe!

I do have it to make it in the Crockpot though for Saturday. We have a big fall barbecue with all fall foods, and I have to make a lot. It'll be a lot easier for me to have it started and cooking throughout the day than to have to make it on the spot.

I have made this. I recall cooking the pasta very al dente to prevent it from getting mushy before adding it to the slow cooker, BUT- I also just looked at my recipe and it only needed to cook for 2.5hrs, so that is probably also why it did not get weird. I would def. not try to cook the pasta in the crock pot. Once it ihas cooked for the time specified in the recipe and you switch it to warm, it should be ok for about 2 hrs.

I don't think mac and cheese would be a good crockpot dish... usually pasta during the latter part of the cooking time for slow cooker meals (probably because it takes so little time to cook in comparison to meats, veggies, etc.).

I think crockpot dishes can also give off a lot of extra liquid, which may dilute your cheese sauce and make it less creamy/too watery.

I've made mac and cheese in advance for a party in large quantities. I've made the baked casserole type, where you mix the pasta with the cheese sauce, put it in a baking dish, and top it with cheese and breadcrumbs (then bake until top is crunchy).

You can assemble that in advance (morning of or even night before) and then just throw it in the oven to bake it when you are ready.
