California announced fully online in the fall. Honestly, I'm expecting the same here.
California is also in a LOT worse shape than us. Going backwards. They start school in August too. We have a much lower transmission rate right now

I wasn't surprised to hear that but things are going in the wrong direction here. I know we hate masks and social distancing but with what is going on in the rest of the county, I really hope people in NY continue to remain vigilant to ensure we continue on the trajectory that we are on. Especially if we want schools to open.

Back to the topic of schools... just saw this....

I've heard from a lot of teachers that it seems a hybrid schedule is most likely. Which is difficult for many, including teachers with children who are expected to be at school every day.
Parents ... plan for remote schooling. Worst case, you don’t need it. But from what I’m hearing, schools are preparing for 3 scenarios. Full in person school, part time remote/part time in person or full remote. And this can happen at the drop of a dime (or a few cases of covid pops up in a school)
You don’t want to leave yourself screwed. Line up relatives or neighbors who can help. Start checking care.com for availability. Have a plan. Because My fear for you guys - it’ll be a shit show
What does part-time mean? What exactly should I tell my boss? I *might* only be able to come in 2 days a week, or I'm only available in the afternoons from September on, or I will just let you know which days I'll be in the week before? Our district hasn't told us what our part time option is. How in the hell are we supposed to "plan" for this?
And where exactly is the money coming for child care for multiple children? I was paying close to $2000 per month for PART TIME daycare until my kids went to school and we searched around so I know that was cheap compared to most centers. And centers are cheaper than hiring a person to come to your home. We went into debt for five years paying for this, with the expectation that once they were in school we could financially recover. Now what??? We can't afford for either DH or I to stop working, and we can't afford to have our children in daycare indefinitely. So how exactly do I, in a practical way, "plan" for this??
I'm not directing this specifically at you PhyllisnJoe, but people need to stop letting us parents know we need to plan for any scenario. That's the least helpful advice I've ever heard. It's useless. It's pointless.
I’m a parent and I’ve made arrangement in advance. I don’t think it’s useless or pointless advice at all. Regardless of what we want, it might happen. And even if they do go back FT, there is a chance a school can close for 2 weeks ++ with pretty much zero notice.
I spoke to my boss and worked out a PT remote work schedule until at least January 2021. DH worked out one day. I also have a retired teacher from my neighborhood lined up to stay with my kids the other day(s) if they’re home. I don’t expect her to do anything but keep them alive so she’s not asking for much $$.
Ok but not everyone can just work out a part time schedule with their job...

Most of it was useless! Does he really need to elaborate things so much? Get straight to the point Cuomo! And then was it really necessary to have Atlanta’s mayor on? I mean we know what’s happening over there already plus he rarely even let her talk. And if he really wanted to have someone on, then why not another state that’s having worse numbers than Atlanta?? According to what he said today (the little bit of time that he dedicated to it), it does seem that he’s gonna open schools. The interesting thing (and what I’m sure most parents won’t be happy with) will be the requirements for going back to school, very convenient he left all that info out.

Until your kids are in seventh grade. It is not going to be fun for parents of elementary age kids who expected to be able to start to save money once their kids were in school. The thing is, in the US, taking care of your kids is seen as a household job and not a society job, so families are not going to get the help they will need. My district is thinking elementary school will be 1/2 day morning and 1/2 day afternoon and you are not getting to choose which section your child will be in.

California announced fully online in the fall. Honestly, I'm expecting the same here.
Cuomo said any region with less than 5% infection rate will be given a green light to open. If today were the first day of school, every region in the state would qualify. I am not saying that the numbers can't change between now and early September, but as of today, I can't see us going fully remote.

True and hopefully we can keep cases down enough to open but that doesn't mean schools don't need to implement a hybrid option to be able to meet the state guidelines.

I thought it said Phase 4 also. NYC isn't in phase 4 and I can see that being delayed.

So far, NYC is set to begin Phase 4 next Monday. I don't see it being delayed two months. NYC numbers were better than LI today. 1.5% tested positive in LI, 1.1% in NYC.

Cuomo did mention a lack of compliance with mask wearing and social distancing to be problem for New York. In particular, he mentioned Long Island being a problem with compliance.

And yet we have the best numbers in the country even with phase 4 starting last week, more things opening, indoor dining, etc. He's never happy....

Did anyone watch him today? More hope for reopening.
Did you really think it was hope for reopening. I got the exact opposite feel.
While he is saying school can be in person, his guidelines are severely going to prevent that. There still needs to be 6 feet between all students (which is virtually impossible at most schools). PE, Music and Band needs 12 feet apart. I can't see it being anything than a hybrid opening.

I also think it's going to be whack a mole with kids and classes being sent home bc of suspected and positive cases.

I think they will reopen but no chance it will be full day every day. Best case is a hybrid model. It’s just so hard to plan when we don’t know exactly what that looks like, 1/2 day every day, or 2 days one week and 3 days the next. This is going to be a nightmare. But if anyone is holding out hope for full time, I’d say that’s totally unrealistic.

Well I’m part-time remote from home, not part-time hours. But yes, I know not everyone can do that.
However making an attempt to plan for something is never a bad thing. I know it sucks, and it’s stressful, and a financial burden for most—but if schools are remote or cut hours we have little choice.

Cuomo says he wants schools to reopen in September, and that is currently the plan
I’m also curious to see how the next few weeks go with plans to reopen. People give Cuomo a lot of hate, but his position is certainly not unique. As the time draws nearer, I’m curious to see if some of the states that say they will open actually do-I believe Utah (or parts) already enacted a 9 week delay with remote learning only. And their cases still aren’t as bad as our “good” level.

Same.
The only way it wouldn't be hybrid is if enough people want to have their kids doing full time remote learning to accommodate the kids who want to go in person full time.

Re: Cuomo says he wants schools to reopen in September, and that is currently the plan
After seeing so much back and forth with who can work remotely to stay home and who just can’t and will be screwed ...Here’s a question that may be completely unrealistic - but running this by parents and teachers.
How about those who can go remote do that so the school has the capacity for the children who’s parents cannot? I know it sounds so simple but know there are snags. Obviously for lower income communities , usually both parents work, but maybe some busing in that instance to schools that have more room because one parent stays home or goes remote? Probably just wishful thinking because of district red tape but I feel like that would help families out so much and isn’t that what they should be considering anyway? The best way to get kids educated and allow families to still function ?

I think this is a horrible idea.
I can go remote but, I am swamped in the spring and fall. During the spring I would work from 7am-10pm taking breaks to scream at my kids, teach my kids and eat. Maybe laundry.
It was horrible and stressful.
The summer has been better as the workload has been lower and I don't have to teach thankfully.
