Cuomo school decision....yes or no?

What is everyone think he will decide (not what you want)

I think he will say no after these schools worked their butts off to make it work.

I think he will say no too.

People who were given in person options in other states have had them taken away and are going fully remote now.

I think my district knows he will say no - their full remote option is a lot more robust than the hybrid model is.

He would have to go back on the metrics he set for schools reopening.

He said a week or two ago that schools open if the infection rate is under 5% and close at 9%. On Tuesday the rate statewide was .98% and it hasn't passed 2% in any of the regions in a while.

I think either the numbers are going to start increasing and/or there is going to be something that is deemed as "unsafe" or something that the districts aren't going to be able to do/address appropriately. Like our district requires masks all day, even when distanced. Kids wearing masks in hot classrooms in early September is bound to be a disaster.

I just fear that if we don't start back in the classroom in some way in September with the numbers holding steady the way they have been, then there is no shot of going back at all this year.

Based on the data, which is how Cuomo is making all of his decision, there is no reason to keep them closed fully.

Dashboard for me says 2.1. My local newspapers say 2.1 as well.

Re: Cuomo school decision....yes or no?

I have no idea...and I am scared.

What are everyone plans if fully remote and both parents work full time?

My son is only 7, going into 2nd grade. He can't do the work on his own...I just don't see how I am going to manage. To get a tutor to come every day to sit with him is going to be expensive. Its one thing to help him with homework for an hour a night, but an entire curriculum all while I am working 40 hours a week?

My youngest is supposed to be going to Pre-K and I already have to shell out $500 a month for that program. My only saving grace is that school I would imagine has to open as it is also a Daycare.

Listen...I am NOT saying health doesnt comes first, of course it does. I dont want my kid going to school if its not safe...but I am just realistically trying to understand how remote school would work, especially with younger children...they would have to make every effort to make the work as minimal as possible. Can we just call the next year a wash? Just cancel school all together and everyone gets left back one year. LOL.

Yep. That was HIS metric.
So he should have to follow it as he was the one who came up with it

I think if the rate is under 5%, he will open the schools. There is too much at stake to not open the schools at this point.

That being said, I also expect they will be closed down again shortly thereafter but I'm trying to remain optimistic.

This whole thing gives me an unbelievable amount of anxiety.

I think he will open the schools, but I agree with the above poster that they will be shut down again not long after, unfortunately.

Re: Cuomo school decision....yes or no?

I feel he will open schools for sure but the minute the numbers go above 5% they will close and we will be back to remote learning.

At least our school at least seems to be offering live virtual classes for HS as an option for kids who do not want to go back to the school building. Then if schools close the live virtual is in place already.

The elementary is offering a hybrid - two days on and two days off..again my hope is if they go to full remote they will be in better shape than March.

The year ahead is going to be a shit show as regards schools, learning, stressed parents etc. I feel like the state should offer some kind of monetary payment to parents to hep with child card costs if remove learning goes full time.

You cannot have parents back at work if their kids are at home. Throw us some sort of a bone and parents would be less stressed. But this should be made clear now so people can find child care solutions in the event it's needed.

No, it's definitely not. And if I was betting on it, I would bet it's the counselors hanging out with their friends after hours that caused it, not the campers.

Last week they had to close down 5 restaurants in two towns on Cape cod because there was a service party for all the waitstaff, etc. and 15 people came down with COVID. Now a bunch of lifeguards on the jersey shore have it too.

It's the college kids that are going to take us all down. Look at the Covid parties. I am trying to remember if I was ever that dumb. Luckily I don't have social media to remind me.

Cuomo has said schools will close at 9%, not at 5%. They just need to be under 5% to reopen.

I think we need to take into consideration there will be precautions in place to slow the spread, much like there have been for every other industry that has reopened and has still managed to keep the spread steady and low.

It will not be a free for all, and it won’t look like school last year pre-COVID when illnesses spread so easily amongst students and teachers.

Will it spread? Probably. But I just don’t see it spreading as quickly as it did before we had any precautions in place.

As for Park Shore..there is no evidence that it spread amongst the counselors at camp where precautions are in place? Has anyone ever worked at a summer camp before? I have, and my co-workers and I got together almost daily after work to hang out.

This is exactly what it is.
Our local pool got shut down briefly. A local camp shut down for a few days. The other camp mentioned above...it was all 18-25 yr old lifeguards and counselors who were patient zero, then half their social circle tests positive.

New “adults“ that don’t GAF because they don’t have mortgages, jobs, kids. They think this is a vacation.

Yes. Once we are in school we have to hit 9% for him to close them. I know already that districts are petitioning the State to be flexible on that metric. A school on the east end does not want to be penalized if say an area in Nassau plumes. As an example.

That makes sense. That would be like Staten Island having to close for a surge in Queens. Might be difficult to manage, though. But it makes sense.

I think if we start remote with numbers where they are right now, there is no chance of going back in person this year. Which is horrible to think about for so many reasons.

At least if Cuomo follows his metrics, we can watch the numbers and see if we are inching to the 9% and prepare better than we were able to in March when they shut with little to no notice.
