Re: Cuomo school decision....yes or no?

I’m confused how schools in NYC can open when NYC isn’t in a full phase 4. I’m 99% positive Cuomo said being in phase 4 was a requirement for schools to open.

Part of the reason the numbers are low because no one is allowed to eat inside or shop at malls. The NYC area is so densely populated. We need time for a full phase 4 prior to opening schools.

Cuomo can’t open schools if the city isn’t a full phase 4.

We will open in September.

By November we will be closed.

What makes you think this?

Based on the numbers we shouldn’t hit 5% by September. So we’ll go back as per the metrics.

However, from a combination of the spread, noncompliance, and the lack of feasibility of some of the plans being floated I believe we will shut down again.

I may very well be wrong. But that’s how I think it’ll play out

Malls and indoor dining are open on LI and the numbers are still very low

Cuomo can do whatever he wants. NYC is considered phase 4. With that being said, I do not believe any schools in the state will be given the green light to open.

Long Island isn’t as densely populated as NYC. Density plays a huge part in the spread of this virus.

I agree. He will do whatever he wants. We’re at his mercy.

Cuomo school decision....yes or no?

If I were district admin, I would be so frustrated that he required schools to put together such comprehensive plans and hold multiple meetings with parents and staff, just to say we are staying closed.

Yes, we need a plan in place regardless. But if that is his intent, then he should have come out and said from the start.

My district just released their plans. It is 63 pages long for her school!! I hope Cuomo has 100’s of staff members to read every single page of the thousands of schools reopening plans in NYS!

For what reason? To continue to lord power over everyone?
This is ridiculous

As far as I've heard/read, he hasn't done that or stated that this was his intent. The only place that's been mentioned is this thread, which is just asking for speculation anyway. There's no point in getting mad over speculations. We just have to wait and see what he winds up saying. (Can't happen soon enough. I just want to know already.)

Omg!! Why??? I am in a panic because my youngest is special needs and gets busing. Apparently everything is on hold until Cuomo makes his announcement. Normally it takes weeks to get the busing sorted out . I am going to lose my mind!!!!

I think the news may have mis-spoken (I heard it second hand in a number of places but, can't find it stated online).

I think it's that he gave an extension to certain schools districts. Like NYC- submitted general plans, but not specific school ones, which is required. they have an extension on that.

Cuomo and his staff are not going to read every single plan. They are going to skim over them to make sure they are abiding by the guidelines. They do not care about how each district does it specifically, just that they do it. His decision is solely going to based on numbers. If it's less than 5 we are allowed to open.

As far as districts creating the plans, I am glad they are doing it. In my opinion, all districts should have had a remote learning plan already in place. Any business (and school is a business) has contingency plans in place for a multitude of scenarios. Some are never used but are there in case. So schools will now have their plans and will need to update yearly if anything changes.

I don't know, but things like this aren't helping the case.

Five Counselors at Dix Hills Day Camp Test Positive

No, it's definitely not. And if I was betting on it, I would bet it's the counselors hanging out with their friends after hours that caused it, not the campers.

It was the counselors - but they were hanging out with each other. At least one child is now positive for the virus. Three different cohorts are quarantined, and the camp is closed until Monday.

I’m in CT, but I totally agree with this. With cold and flu season and the symptoms overlapping with COVID, even if there are only a few positive cases in the school or with household members, there will likely be a lot of quarantines as a precaution. At some point, whether it’s the frequent quarantines, increase in students/staff with symptoms or uptick in cases, it won’t make sense to keep schools open.

No one is fully in Phase 4. There are many industries in Phase 4 that are not allowed to open.

They have said the camper’s case is unrelated to the counselors who have it.
