Re: Cuomo wants to cap Superintendent Salaries..
I agree with cap but my real question is how come my grades were horrible, did not graduate with regents diploma and according to my college professors my writing was on an elementary level, how did I even graduate from a New York school?
New York schools are top rated but the teachers (and parents) have to care and that can happen in any state.

Now that I've read the above post closer...move down south, pay low taxes, and see the crappy education your kid(s) get.
And again, enjoy your lower taxes and good riddance to you.
Hmmm...that is interesting, considering that so many the top high schools are "down south". Also, I received my "crappy" education down south and somehow managed to go to a top undergrad and law school. Despite my crappy southern education (FL) I graduated with honors from both college and law school and held my own against kids from LI.
Geesh, stickydust, did you not know that all Southerners are sister-******* morons? It's amazing that there are colleges in the South. Of course they are the equivalent of a Long Island middle school. My degrees should have just been printed on toilet paper. I hear it all the time.

I love NY and was educated here, but it definitely seems like the teachers here are full of themselves and don't think you can get a quality education anywhere else buy Long Island.
You are too much! It totally seems like you joined this board just to bash teachers! Do you have anything else noteworthy to add to this board? It is really getting frustrating!

It seems that way because that is what he does. Look at his posting history, more then half the time he is engaged in debates about teachers.

I've posted to other topics and started a few of my own. I have read this board for a year or so now and felt like posting. I don't think I actually bash teachers, I just point out another point of view. I am sorry if you think I am bashing teachers, but I really do respect them. People are taking this personal when it is really just economics.
And to the funny comment about me just regretting not being a teacher, I got a good laugh at that one. That is not the case at all.

That is the case because these posts have more back and forth debates. Other posts I have made have either answered questions or asked questions. I think that would make sense. And it is a pretty small sample size since I have only been posting for a little over a month.

Posted by ChrisDee ETA: I have never once bashed teachers or their salaries in any teacher related post. I have said all along that the higher ups are being overpaid and their pensions are killing us. I said that we have waaaay too many districts and need to combine. That is it, PERIOD! So why you and a few others feel the need to attack when I made an ERROR that was told to me IN ERROR by my super(he apologies to you too BTW ) REALLY? Lets go back to the issue. MY super was paid $432,000 last year and to me that is OUTRAGEOUS!!!!
I am one of the posters that had a comment about your post however, I have not attacked you at all. Prior to you writing that the Sup't misspoke, I quoted you and wrote "I'm sorry but I think you may have misheard what he said." How is that attacking?
I said a "FEW" people not ALL.

Hey SlurpeeDad, GOOD FOR YOU for having an opinion and sticking to it! I you. I realize you're taking a lot of heat on here but at least you express your opinion in an adult manner and you do not back down. Not even when they are taking immature shots at you.

Re: Cuomo wants to cap Superintendent Salaries..
Disclaimer: I'm a teacher. I'm a well paid teacher in an affluent school district.
With that being said, I do think Superintendents are overpaid. But when you look at the bigger picture, they are the CEO of a school district and are responsible for SO MUCH. I think their salaries SHOULD be capped, but I don't think $179K is fair considering some top paid teachers are making only $50k less than that. The cost of living on Long Island is FAR more expensive than in the middle of upstate NY. I think there needs to be some adjustments to the cap based on COL. How that should be done, IDK....
I do think based on the level of education and experience a well qualified Sup't has, paying them $250k is fair. More than that is just plain ridiculous!
As for teachers, I think we are fairly paid considering our level of education. We have to have our Masters at the minimum after 5 yrs of teaching and for me personally, I have 60 graduate credits beyond my Masters and counting and 14 yrs experience... I think that justifies my salary.

I think you are wrong. 175 is A LOT of money!!!!! And well deserved due to their responsibilities. Anything over than that is ridiculous. Sorry but some cuts need to be made. Maybe with the cuts in these salaries mean more job for others?

I agree it is a LOT of money... but a Sup't has a PhD, YEARS of experience in education, and is responsible for an entire school district from the business, to the financial, to curriculum, to student/parents. They work 12 months a year and 12hrs a day in most cases.
Cuts can be made in so many other ways - believe me. There are so many other people at the administration level and in administration buildings that are making LOTS of money for being a secretary.... those people are way overpaid too... From secretaries, to custodians, to data entry people.... Lots of BIG salaries that they wouldn't make elsewhere if they weren't in a school district.

In addition to whatever cap, you need to include the benefits that are included in that...pensions, life insurance that is portable, dis. insurance, medical benefits, the ability to bank sick time for your entire career and use that as a pay out for non deferred compensation; add all that in to a gross of $175,000 and it becomes a much greater salary.

How much do you think secretaries, custodians and such are paid? None of those jobs ever get into the 6 figures. And those jobs are the jobs that tend to pay below private wages for the same skill level.

Edited: The above text should've had quotes but I mistakenly edited them out....
Some of those people DO get paid in the 6 figures when they've been in the district for a while. The custodian in my school makes $115k!!!!! We can't compare private wages to public employees because if you use that argument, then Sup't SHOULD make what they're making if not more if you look at them as a CEO.... School district employees are public employees. We don't get bonuses, we don't get contributions to our 401ks, we don't get paid overtime. Take those three things alone - we're different from the private sector. Which, IMO, makes up for why many districts pay so well, Sup'ts included. I DO think there should be a cap on their salaries, but I think it should be at $250k considering COL for LI vs. Upstate. That's all I'm saying.
I also think that there are plenty of places to cut the fat and save districts money in addition to salary cuts. We could invest in online text book subscriptions for Middle and HS students with ONE set of paper texts for use in class. That would save TONS of money. Elem classrooms can share textbooks and also offer online support if needed.
Another place to cut spending is on the use of paper. Districts can go green and send flyers home online instead of by paper in a child's folder. Most of those flyers are never looked at anyway. Believe me, it's not uncommon to find the same notices or flyers for an upcoming school event stuck at the bottom of the backpack or in the back of the folder and they're not taken out by parents, so one can only imagine parents never saw them. Having a link on the school's website with reminders being sent to parent's emails can help tremendously. They can also make the copier machines automatically print on double sides as the default option. That would save TONS of paper and $$ too.
Schools can also invest in upgrading the buildings with more energy efficient windows - the stuff on my windowsill is always freezing cold and you can FEEL the cold air blowing in. That's a waste of heat that can cost the district millions over time. It would cost millions to upgrade, but in the long run, it will save money. My school was built in the 1940s and the windows are original. Lots of $$ literally being thrown out the window there.

Re: Cuomo wants to cap Superintendent Salaries..
People seem to forget government (local or federal) jobs are not paid a lot of money. The benefit of these jobs are so you can retire with a pension with benefits. This being said if you want to make a CEO salary than you should work in the private sector. No goverment job in NY state should be paid $250,000

I can't comment on custodians, but my mom spent most of her career as a school secretary and i think people would fall over when they hear the salary. My mom worked 10 months but was asked by her principal to follow him to asst super and then again to super and she turned him down twice, b/c even with the confidentiality bonus and 12 month salary it was tiny.
I would be really surprised if any LI school secretary made over 50K
