Well, I did, but it was coincidental.

I lost my job a week before Christopher was born so I collected unemployment until he was 5 months old.

I put yes, but that's because I just recently became a SAHM after being let go from my job. You can't collect unemployment unless you are actively looking for employment and are ready, willing and able to work.

This is what I was going to write. You can't collect unemployment just because you are a SAHM. If you were laid off and are home with your kids as a result, you can collect if you are actively seeking employment and are fully intending to re-enter the workforce. When you sign your unemployment filing you are swearing that you are actively seeking employment and ready, willing and able to work.

Yeah see a friend of mine... her aunt collects it and she's been out of work for like a year. They just sent her a letter saying they were extending it too and she's not seeking any work.

ETA: i should add that she's in NJ.

Same here, except I got laid off a week after DS & I came home from the hospital.

No. However. My last place of employment paid me the entire 7 weeks I was on bedrest as well as DS's first 6 weeks of life (full salary).

I think technically you are only entitled to unemployment if you've been laid off for 6 months. Then you can apply for them to extend it for a year or more if you show proof that you are either actively looking or taking some kind of career advancement type classes.

Is she taking any online classes or something?

Re: Curious... unemployment... SAHM?

My husband is a SAHD and he is collecting unemployment... BUT he is in a union and on a list so therefore is qualified as actively seeking a job.

I am collecting, but I got laid off while I was on maternity leave. Right now I am looking for freelance work so I can work from home, so I am actively looking for and ready to work.

As with unemployment anywhere. It depends on how often they check up on you to see if you are looking for a job and if on the off chance they find you a job and you turn it down.

I collected it with my DD just because i happened to be laid off the week before she was born. The timing couldn't have been better for it. And since i was on unemployment i was also able to apply for WIC with her and get formula, cereal and milk, which definitly helped since with my regular salary i would have never qualified for any assistance.

Sure people play the odds, I'm not foolish to that. However the simple reality is that if you sign the paperwork stating you are ready, willing and able to work, etc. knowingly lying it is perjury. I am a disability attorney and this is the very reason why I do not accept clients who are currently on unemployment. It is perjury to tell one government agency that you can work, and that apply for benefits under another gov't agency claiming you are unable to work.

Me as well.

As far as your friend's aunt, each week that she certifies for her benefits, she is entering information that she is actively looking for a job.

Re: Curious... unemployment... SAHM?

Before DS was born, I was afraid I'd get laid off. Now that he is here, I wouldn't mind getting laid off at all. It'd be great to be a SAHM and collect unemployment. If the economy doesn't turn around and there is another round of layoffs, I'll probably ask to get laid off.

Re: Curious... unemployment... SAHM?

I was a working mom until getting laid off in March of this year so now I am a SAHM and collect unemployment. I knew a round of lay offs was coming and I was pretty sure I was going to get caught in it. That's exactly what happened.

After I was let go we of course had to let go of our nanny so now I am home with the kids. As unpleasant as it is to lose a job, especially in this economy, this was my only chance to ever be a SAMH so that is certainly a big plus in this otherwise unpleasant situation.

Totally agree with you. Unpleasant but the time with your kids is so so precious. You will never get it back. I am looking forward to it..:)

Re: Curious... unemployment... SAHM?

your office has to notify the state that you have been laid off and then you can go online and file for unemployment.

I doubt it. I was laid off during both of my pregnancies. I collected unemployment both times and even after I had the baby. No one ever checked or followed up.
