Current Kindergarten Parents with Sept Oct Nov Birthdays(Preschool Parents welcome to share thoughts on what they will be doing come september 2012 as well)
If I could just ask a quick question. How is your child doing in K?
I'm on the fence about sending my DS to K in Sept 2012 because his birthday is November 30th and the cutoff is December 1st. I believe he can get threw based on what his preschool teacher has said, but I'm just worried.
So what I'm looking for is to see what current parents did last year?
TIA

DS is the youngest child in his elementary school- he is 11/29 and cutoff is 12/1!
He is doing GREAT! I am so glad we sent him. Sometimes I worry about the future- maturity as an adolescent- but for right now, he got the highest grades possible on his report card and he loves it!

My son was born at the end of October and the cut off is Dec. 1st. He is now in 3rd grade and started at the same time as other kids his age and he has surpassed many of them with his grades.

Re: Current Kindergarten Parents with Sept Oct Nov Birthdays(Preschool Parents welcome to share thoughts on what they will be doing come september 2012 as well)
Well, my DD isn't there yet, but her bday is Dec 1 and we are going to start her on time. Cut off by us is Jan 1. We debated waiting a year, but have opted against it. However, my younger daughter's bday is Jan 9. She misses the cutoff by 8 days. We are thinking of trying to push her up because she is really advanced on many levels. Even the ped has always said she is really advanced. She always prefers being around older kids, too. I don't know if it is possible, but we are going to try to start her in preschool in Sept and if she is doing well, will see what we can do about pushing her up to meet the cut off.
FWIW, my bday is 11/29. Academically, I always did great. I was kind of shy, but I think that is my personality and I doubt it would have been different if I started a year later. Of course, I can't know that for sure.

DS is mid November and he is doing great. Honestly he would be SO bored in preschool another year. But it also depends on the individual child's personality and development.

My ds is only 3 now but we will have the same issue. He is a little behind the other kids in his nursery class meaning he goofs off a lot and doesn't listen to the teacher. I am going to put I'm in k when he is 4. (turning 5) because in dont believe in holding the kids back. I have a feeling this is just his personality ( a clown!)
Worst case is that his k teacher keeps him back, hopefully that won't happen.
My bday is end of December, so there were kids lost a year older then I was. Grade wise I did well, socially I was a little immature.

Re: Current Kindergarten Parents with Sept Oct Nov Birthdays(Preschool Parents welcome to share thoughts on what they will be doing come september 2012 as well)
Cut off in my district (in TX) is September 1. AJ is Aug 22nd.
Waaaaaaaaaay back when, cut off was around the first of September for Cuba, Virginia & California. My father got my brother to get in at 5 because his bday was only 5 days later (that was in Cuba – US base). I think they had like two week grace or something back then. I’m Aug 20. So we both started at 5 for Kinder (I started in Virginia then moved to California).
He was held back a year in 7th grade due to maturity. Academically it destroyed him. He dropped out of High School later, but did get his GED and an Associates degree.
I was denied the ability to skip a grade due to my age, but academically was ready to graduate at 16yrs old. Instead I graduate at 17. I was too young to sign up for anything in college. I had curfew for the first few weeks until I finally turned 18. I was in the top percentage of my HS class. I never finished college.
Meh
AJ will be in Kindergarten at 5.

I would hold the child back if possible.
DC is a Dec. baby and only turned 3 a month ago but I see a huge difference between him and kids who are born the same year as him but already 4.
Would not want my child to feel stressed about having to catch up with his older peers. Let him learn at his own pace and be a child abit longer...

Besides academics and maturity, you might also want to think about sports ability. I know it sounds silly now, but you may want to think about how he will fair athletically against kids who are all older than him.

Re: Current Kindergarten Parents with Sept Oct Nov Birthdays(Preschool Parents welcome to share thoughts on what they will be doing come september 2012 as well)
My bday is Nov 29 and my mom put me through based on what the teachers said. I had a lot of struggles with school and in 3rd grade my mom made the decision to hold me back...Well at the time I was embarresed because of it but in all honesty it was the best thing she did for me. She put me in a different school and I got to start off new. I did great and I was able to catch up. I had no issues in HS and college.
I told my DH that if we had children born in NOV that I would hold them back just based on my own experience and that in the long run it wouldnt even effect them and that I would rather do from the begining then later on when they will be self consious about it.
Good Luck and you know if your gut how you think you child will do...

Unfortunately, someone has to be the youngest. DS is a Sept. baby and I will not be holding him back. My birthday is December 19 and my mother pushed me ahead so I was 17 when I entered college. I didn't love it b/c all my friends were able to drive etc. before me. HOWEVER, my mother's bday is Dec. 25 and my grandmother held her back and she hated it too! If all the Nov, and Oct parents held their kids back, what would then happen to the sept and aug kids? It is like a vicious cycle!

While its true that someone has to be the youngest, to me its not about age. I know 3 people who recently held their DC back a year and 1 who sent her DC to private k a year early. To me the most important factor in deciding is setting my child up for success. I don't want him to struggle academically BC of his age, nor do I want his maturity level to be an issue. You have to know your child. Personally I want school to come day in those early years to my DS BC I truely feel when you struggle at something, especially at a young age, you will not enjoy it, and if you don't enjoy school at 5 BC you struggle, maybe its that you can't spell your name while everyone else can, or maybe its that full day 5 days a week is just too much for your DC at this point, you most likely won't like it at 15. Kwim.
And as a previous poster mentioned sports, being the smallest, ESP for a boy can be a disadvantage too.
I think honestly, you need to weigh the pros and cons for you and your child. Gl

Re: Current Kindergarten Parents with Sept Oct Nov Birthdays(Preschool Parents welcome to share thoughts on what they will be doing come september 2012 as well)
DH is a nov birthday. He was held back in kindergarten. He eventually skipped a grade when he was in 3rd grade so he is now in his rightful year. He is usually the youngest in his class.
All kids are different. You should know if your child is ready.
I know a mom who decided to keep her child back. He did not turn 5 yet and she knew he was not ready. Her biggest concern was that her son was off the charts in height. He was 4 but looked like a 1st grader. By the time he goes to kindergarten, he will be even bigger.

Dd is a December birthday..she misses the cutoff by two weeks in our district...I pushed her forward now in preschool and her teacher has told us that at this point we should still be pushing her forward and re asses next year in pre k...but she believes that she will continue on this trajectory and that we should have her tested and try to push her forward..she has been very honest and has held kids back or suggested it parents to hold their kids back. I have a late sept birthday and was always fine maturity wise and academically wise and dd has a very similar personality to mine so as of now I will be pushing her forward

Re: Current Kindergarten Parents with Sept Oct Nov Birthdays(Preschool Parents welcome to share thoughts on what they will be doing come september 2012 as well)
DS is an August baby and cut off here is 10/1. DD is a September baby.
I am not sure what we are going to do. Both of my kids are tall. They are between 75-90% for height. I have thought about what to do for my kids since I knew I was pregnant with each of them. At this point I am going to send DS to kindergarten this Fall. Based on his evaluation with his teacher academically he is fine. He does need to improve his maturity, but in the past few months I can completely see a huge improvement in his social/maturity skills. I plan on discussing everything with his teacher in a few months to re-evaluate my decision. Most of me feels that if I don't even give him the opportunity to try then how will I know he will be able to succeed?

I teach high school and know several boys who are sept -nov bdays and are very successful in sports....I don't think age = height/strength/athletic success! I do agree that you have to know your child...and unfortunately, the way the education system is set up, kindergarten is not about play anymore. I think there are many children who are born in January that can not spell there name going into kindergarten just as much as there are kids born in late nov that can't spell there name going into kindergarten. I also think that the early childhood teachers are crucial in setting a child up for their later years.

Re: Current Kindergarten Parents with Sept Oct Nov Birthdays(Preschool Parents welcome to share thoughts on what they will be doing come september 2012 as well)
I didn't think there was much option (what do I know, my oldest is just getting ready to turn 4)
My birthday is 12/22 & I was one of the youngest. i actually had friends who were 11 months older than me, & even a full year older than me & I did just fine, even better in school. I even grew to be 5'8"
My youngest's birthday is 9/7 & I plan to start her when she's the determined age.

My son is 11/26 and the cutoff is 12/1. We struggled with this decision so much, in the end we held him back. It was def the right decision. We met with the principle and he told us if you can afford the expense of full time pre k, it cant hurt, if anything it will only give him an advantage. everyone said if he was a girl they would send him but boys def mature slower than girls. good luck, either way I am sure he will do great.
ETA: My husband was a dec baby and the cutoff was dec 31. He always felt like the little guy on the team so that played a factor in our decision.

DD isn't in K yet. But she is in pre-K. Her bday is Nov 22. Her teacher said she would think she is 6 months older.
I'm sending her to K next year. I think she is ready. If the teacher thinks he will be ok, then I say go for it.

Ds is Oct 3, cutoff is dec 31. I'm sending him in September. He'll be starting at 4. As a matter of fact, I already started registration process. As long as his teacher's in pre-k feel his ready, I'm comfortable, and to be honest, pre-k is soo expensive. I'm looking forward to saving money each month, as long as he's ready for Kindergarten

This is actually very, very true. My Dad is a very smart guy and based on teacher suggestions, he actually skipped 2 grades by the time he was in HS. (he's an April bday). He graduated HS at 16 and college at 20. To this day (and he is 64), he regrets it and says it hurt him especially because of sports. He's a strong personality, so he was able to withstand a lot socially, but he LOVED (still loves) sports and wish he could have been more active and successful in sports. A ped could probably help you assess size-wise whether your DS would be on the smaller side, average size or larger size.

I'm having the opposit problem - my DD will turn 4 on Monday and I'm shopping around now for Kindergarten. I know academically she's there... she already can write her name, does homework, counts and adds... if I leave her where she is she's going to be in the same class next year and bored. When she's bored, she finds trouble...
Hopefully I can get her tested and into school for the fall, which will make her the youngest instead of the oldest. I was always at the younger end with an October birthday but it was never a big deal.

MY DD turned 5 on Nov. 29th and she is in Kindergarten. She is doing great! She loves it! I would never have imagined waiting a year. She would of been bored, as I felt she already knew so much before even going to K and did so well in Pre-K. GL with your decision!
