Cut DD finger with nail clipper!!! Help!

Help! i feel awful and I'm in tears! I cut DD finger with the nail clipper by accident when trying to cut her nails. It's not gushing blood, but it doesn't seem to want to stop bleeding. I cleaned it with soap and water and put a band aid on it and put a mitten on her hand so she can't put her fingers in her mouth to lose the band aid. Anyone else do this and what did you do? Should I call the dr. It's not a big cut and not gushing. God, I feel terribleChat Icon

Happens to everyone at least once. DH did it to DS once, he was devastated.

Put some pressure on it, so the bleeding will stop.

pressure and put some neosporin or something of the like, just keep mitten on so she doesn't ingest it.

every single solitary one of us has done this and anyone who says they haven't is lieing!

it's okay...it's going to happen!!!

apply pressure, see if you can lift her hand above her heart (like in the air)...that should help stop the bleeding.

Thank you all! I wasn't sure if I could put neosporin or anything on it since she is only 4 wks.

I wouldn't put neosporin. The package says not to use until 2 years of age. If you washed it I'm sure that's good enough. Chat Icon

i agree. i know a good friend of mine - her daughter was in the hospital due to some finger infections...and she was told to use polysporin....

i know lots of people swear by breastmilk too - if you are bf'ing..

our ped said its fine as long as its kept away from babies mouth, we put tons of it on DS when he was 8 old days after circumcision

Also thats why they tell you never to cut their nails, just file them down. Good luck with that, but if you start a habit of doing it, its much easier as they get older. DS now hold one file in the free hand, and helps me file this nails and toes.

Re: Cut DD finger with nail clipper!!! Help!

I cut DDs finger when she was a few months old. I felt awful and had a hard time cutting them again! But, as long as you cleaned it, she'll be fine. It's much worse on mommy than baby!

Re: Cut DD finger with nail clipper!!! Help!

I did it too.
And the odd thing is she didn't even cry when I did it- which if you knew my DD, you would know is VERY unlike her. (She cries when I brush her hair!)

Same thing- it just kept bleeding and bleeding.
I was in a panic- thinking she was losing so much blood Chat Icon

I ended up putting pressure on it, adn then just putting a band aid on it- and when she woke up from her nap it had stopped and was fine.

I make DH cut her nails now though!

OMG I did the same thing! DS was bleeding like crazy...I was sobbing! It was pretty much gone the next day! I now do it when they are asleep. My clippers are made by safety 1st...Yeah nothing safe about them!

Re: Cut DD finger with nail clipper!!! Help!

I did this 2 times when my DD was 4 mths old. I still get upset to THIS day, I am sick over it and my DD is 2.5+. I did call the dr at the time. They told me to just clean it and put a dab of bacitracin. Put a bandaid but put socks on and watch carefully. I didnt let my DD sleep with the bandaids, only a clean sock.

It's so upsetting. I still get sick when I think about how I hurt her. But she is ok. And your DD will be too.Chat Icon Chat Icon

eta- I still wont cut them to this day. I file them. I just feel so uneasy about cutting them.Chat Icon

Actually all the books I read said you can cut them after 2 mths old b/c before that, the nails are attached to the skin. So I waited for DD to turn 4 mths old (DOUBLE the recommendation) and it still happened. It's just hard based on the angle! But just wanted to share that I went by what I read and I still cut DD.
