I cut DD with the nail clipper by accident

I feel like a horrible Mom. She was screaming like crazy. I ran it under water and we cleaned it out. I'm never cutting them again DH can do it.

How do you stop the bleeding?

DH did this when DS was quite new. it was HORRIBLE! Felt so bad for BOTH of them. We ALL Cried that night!

We stopped the bleeding with running cold water, too. I ended up holding him for a very very very long time and rocking him to sleep.

We also ended up putting a little bandaid on his finger during the day, when I could watch him with it.

Don't worry, yuo're not a horrible mom! From then on we just cut his naisl when he was asleep.

Re: I cut DD with the nail clipper by accident

I did this twice...I still get upset when I think about it and DD is now 9 mths old. Chat Icon

It's such a common mistake. Now I never cut them, I have to file them so often and I hate even doing that. Chat Icon

Hers bled on and off for a day or two b /c when it would get wet, the scab would loosen. And I was afraid to use a band aid. I did put a paper towel with a sock over it in there during the day, to let it scab over.

Just wanted to share this...in one of my baby books it says if you get cold sores NOT to do this, that the baby can get herpes on their finger this way. Just wanted to share..for all reading in case anyone didnt think of this.

I did this when DS was only a few weeks old. I felt horrible too.
Now it is much easier to cut their nails.

Try filing the nails instead.

I cut Abby once. She healed well and she was fine.

Don't feel bad. This is common and it happens.
My husband did this to my son when he was small and it was a very small. After that, he never cuts my son's nails anymore. Now with our daughter, he doesn't either. I file them. It's easier when they are so small. As they get bigger, it gets easier and better to use the nail clipper and not cut them.

Re: I cut DD with the nail clipper by accident

The first time I switched from filing to cutting with nail clippers, I got through 7 nails, on the 8th nail, I cut DS. It was the first time I ever heard him screech in pain. I felt terrible. Although it bothered me so much, and it did bleed a bit on and off the next day or so, he got over it pretty quickly. Needless to say, I haven't used nail clippers since. However, I hated having to file so often, so I tried out baby nail scissors and those work great for me.

They came in The First Years American Red Cross Grooming Kit. It's so much quicker than filing. Granted, I still only do it if someone is holding DS or if he's strapped in b/c they are scissors and he's very squirmy. It's hard to explain exactly, but the way these scissors are made, you can hold it against the skin, so you don't get skin caught in it. Sad to say it, but I love them!

You can also try peeling the nails. They're so thin and right after a bath its really easy to just peel them.Chat Icon

DH did the same thing to DD's toe and it took a while to heal. Just apply direct pressure and put a little bandaid on it with some A&D ointment. It's so hard to clip their toes/fingers!! You are not a bad mommy!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You need to apply direct pressure and hold a bandage in place for awhile, maybe 10 minutes. If you keep peaking to see if the bleeding is letting up, it just starts again. You can also rinse under cold water, but I found the direct pressure really stopped it. Try to hold DCs hand over the heart also.

I did this to DS when he was young and felt awful too, so I know how you feel. Chat Icon After that, we filed his nails until he was about a year and his fingers were bigger!

Re: I cut DD with the nail clipper by accident

I so know how you feel. DH cut DS and he bled for a long time. After 15 minutes we called the dr. on call. It was a half hour by the time I got the call back and she sent us to the ER, his finger wouldn't stop bleeding. Yeah we felt horrible. DH still cuts his nails but has learned how to do it much safer.
