Dairy Allergy

Hi! I have a severe casein allergy and can't have any dairy products. I was wondering if anyone else out there has a similar issue and, if so, are you taking any calcium supplements in addition to your prenatals?

I was always pretty lax about taking calcium in the past & kind of just relied on my fortified soy milk to do the trick, but now that I'm +1, I'm wondering if I need to up my intake any more than the prenatals...? My first doc appt. isn't until 6/12, so I haven't had a chance to ask my doc yet. Thanks!

Thanks! Great website! Chat Icon

I actually got in to talk to my doc this morning. She recommended that I get 1300 - 1500 mg a day. My prenatals only contain 200mg, so I'm going to need a supplement in addition to calcium rich foods. I'm thinking the Viactive chocolate chew supplements will do the trick! Chat Icon

Re: Dairy Allergy

I heard though that your body is limited in the amount of calcium it can absorb at once... something like 400 mg per meal?

Also calcium from food absorbs more readily than from supplements...

it's probably best to do both... foods + supplements...

I feel your pain with this whole allergy thing. While I'm an avid dairy muncher and don't have a calcium problem, I have a fish allergy. So I have the same dietary supplement problems when it comes to omega 3's. I spent hours online trying to figure out a source that wouldn't wig-out my immune system (obviously can't take fish oil pills, and flax oil is incomplete and is not supposed to be consumed during pregnancy).
I finally found a fish-free DHA source... Thank you Expecta supplements!
