Can you ladies who are BFing exclusively please tell me how you knew that your DC had an allergy. Please tell me what you had to do to deal with this situation.
Thanks!

Re: Dairy/Protein/Milk Allergy--EBF moms
from day 2, Josh broke out in a bad rash on his face. They said it was acne, but it looked painful. It was on his face, neck and behind his ears.
I kept taking him to dr, they said it was acne.
Then one day, his poop changed from seedy mustard, to dark green. They said my milk had too much foremilk.
I brought a dirty diaper in to be tested and blood was found in his stool.
this website is VERY helpful mspi
I decided to EBF because I needed to learn recipes to cook for Josh anyway.

Re: Dairy/Protein/Milk Allergy--EBF moms
When DS started to have poop that looked mucusy, the doctor told me to cut out dairy for a week to see if it changed. For him, it did not. The mucus just stopped on its own. But that's a sign. Also, don't flip out over green poop. DIfferent shades mean different things.

Re: Dairy/Protein/Milk Allergy--EBF moms
Her skin was dry in the beginning and rashy. I thought it was the typical newborn rash they get but it was just getting really dry. By 5 months her torso was red and like sandpaper. All she did was itch and she had eczema. Her poop was also mucusy and dark green. The eczema was getting bad and the ped. agreed to go to an allergist and also to get blood work done.

Re: Dairy/Protein/Milk Allergy--EBF moms
DS had really bad eczema. Especially in all of the creases of his joints. It started as tiny little red bumps, but then the whole area turned into a big red patch that would ooze. His poop was mucousy too, but my ped said that is normal for BF babies.

Re: Dairy/Protein/Milk Allergy--EBF moms
So can you ladies tell me what steps you took when you saw the blood in the stool. I am not a big dairy person at all and I want to continue nursing. Thanks

Re: Dairy/Protein/Milk Allergy--EBF moms
I never saw the blood, microscopic.
I did not even have an appt...but I was fed up with just being told it was acne.
I brought a poopy diaper to the office and asked them to test it for blood.
It took 2 minutes, right in the office...blood was found.
As I understand from what I have read, their intestines are not mature enough to breakdown the protein causing the bleeding.

Re: Dairy/Protein/Milk Allergy--EBF moms
I had my DS 3 month well visit yesterday and when the doc took off the diaper she noticed some blood in it and tested it and said it came back positive. I am so upset over this. I never saw it before. She basically told me to stop dairy for two days and then bring back a sample on Friday and if it shows negative then that means it is a milk allergy. I am not a big dairy person at all, but this week I was nuts with it. I had almost a half gallon of milk, chocolate, shake, etc. I OBVIOUSLY want what is best for my DS and want to continue nursing. I was thinking of going to a pediatric allergist to get a second opinion.
For those of you that saw the blood in the diaper/stool how many times did it happen? We just saw it yesterday and that is all. My son has no rashes, no excezma.
Thanks

Re: Dairy/Protein/Milk Allergy--EBF moms
DD had bloody poop @2mths and eczema. There were 2 incidences that I noticed and then it kept coming back positive until I cut dairy out of my diet. Now if she has dairy she breaks out in a rash on her face and hands.

Re: Dairy/Protein/Milk Allergy--EBF moms
My friend's son was just diagnosed with a milk allergy (he is almost 6 months) she BFs too. She took him to a ped allergist to get tested - If there is any doubt you DC has a milk allergy I would go to the ped allergist to be sure.

Re: Dairy/Protein/Milk Allergy--EBF moms
Hi my son was just diagnost with a milk allegry. I gave him some formula and he ended up breaking out in hives all over his body. We went to an allegrist and they did a skin test with milk and soy b/c most babies who are allergic to milk are also allergic to soy.
I will fm you my ped allergist.
