Danielle thinks our dog swallowed a Screw
Danielle thinks our dog swallowed a Screw, Doyou think we should wait to see if he poops it out or do you think we should bring him to the doctor?
She opened his mouth, and stuck her fingers in there but couldnt get to it. She isnt 100% sure but she thinks it was a screw.
Our dog is a 10lb chihuahua Scott

Re: Danielle thinks our dog swallowed a Screw
Take him to the vet to get x-rayed. If he did swallow it it could perforate or puncture his digestive organs. This is a very serious condition if it happened.
I hope Tiny is OK

Re: Danielle thinks our dog swallowed a Screw
I think the dog should be brought to the vet for an x-ray. It could damage his digestive tract if it's sharp.
Poor little guy.

Re: Danielle thinks our dog swallowed a Screw
how big of a screw? if its a very tiny one, I wouldn't worry. if you dont think he'll be able to poo poo it out, then i would take him to the vet.

I hate to be a stickler, but even if it is a very small screw it could do major damage to a small dog. The turns in a 10 lb dog's intestines would be affected by a thumb tack or smaller.

Re: Danielle thinks our dog swallowed a Screw
She isnt sure - He eats anything and everything. She was cleaning our bedroom looked down and there he was....She said she heard him chewing on something hard -- and then went to open his mouth....

Re: Danielle thinks our dog swallowed a Screw
The vet told me b/c it wasn't a big screw, to watch Tiny and make sure he isn't in any pain or discomfort. If he starts acting funnt or had diaherra (TMI) to call. I asked if we should bring him in immediately for x-rays and she said it should pass but to watch him.

Wow, I hope he is OK. I'd also watch for belching or gurgling noises coming from his abdomen.

Re: Danielle thinks our dog swallowed a Screw
I have a 15lb dog that eats everything- and the vet usually says to watch him for a few hours and then to bring him in - so thats why I said that.

Wow-hope he's okay-I remember when my dog (a huge lab) ate part of a corn cob the vet made us take him in as an emergency due to possible perforation

I always get so paranoid about that when we do any work around the house. They find the littlest things!
I hope Tiny is ok!

Poor little guy.
I agree. It could get lodged into his digestive tract and cause internal bleeding/damage - better safe than sorry - especially with a beloved pet

Re: Danielle thinks our dog swallowed a Screw
Well Scott and I are keeping a watch on Tiny.So far he seems fine and I have touched him around his belly to see if it bothered him. I guess when he does finally go the bathroom we will have to make sure it comes out . I'll leave that job up tp Scott

Re: Danielle thinks our dog swallowed a Screw
When I thought Gizmo ate chicken bones, the vet said to feed him bread. the vet also said just to watch him, check his poop, look for blood in his poop.

Re: Danielle thinks our dog swallowed a Screw
My vet told me once that a dog can eat broken glass and pass it through their system with no problem - but a sock or stocking is deadly! Hopefully Tiny will be a-o-kay!!!!
