Re: day care - WWYD?

When DS was in daycare, we chose closer to home.

We preferred that he would not have to be in the car an hour plus a day when he didn't need to be.

We didn't have anyone local to really pick him up too, I would come to Centereach from Mineola if he needed to be picked up.

We liked the idea of if he was sick, not having to be in the car for an hour on the way home, KWIM?

But I understand being closer to work as well too...

Re: day care - WWYD?

I would pick somewhere closer to work mainly due to family being close by.

Re: day care - WWYD?

LB - Right now Samanta is in daycare smack in the middle between home and work. However, I have to move her in September since my office is moving and her current daycare is nowhere near my commute route. I could have kept her with the same franchise and move her to their facility near my new office. However, after giving it some thought I decided closer to home was better. I do have the option to work from home on occassion, so it made more sense to keep her closer to home instead of having to drive an hour each way to drop her off and pick her up. I thought about days if I'm sick and can't go to work, or if I have to work out of our NYC office (not that, that is likely to happen, but it can). I also needed a place that was convienent for DH to drop and pick her up as well if I couldn't.

Re: day care - WWYD?

I chose a daycare a few blocks away from my house. My DH can literally walk her over there in the AM and I don't have to worry about getting her into the car, finding parking, dropping her off etc. I also live in Brooklyn though, so it's a little different for me.

Kate - my commute in the morning will be about 35 minutes, but in the afternoon it could be closer to an hour or an hour and a half if there is bad traffic.

i have a lot to think about, thanks Chat Icon

That's the other thing I had to think about, the amount of time in the car. My new commute is going to be a b!tch, and Samantha does not do well for long periods of time in the car.

see that is another thing - i have to find a day care with flexible days and hours because DH works on a rotating schedule. i do not want to pay for days he is not in day care unless i have to.

Yeah, that's nearly impossible to find without spending a buttload of moneyChat Icon

Before I got laid off, we were looking for 2 days a week for Christopher starting in August and it was going to be $400/month. We were just going to bite the bullet and pay for a set two days b/c it was so hard to accomodate Chris' scheduleChat Icon

Most people I work with chose closer to work. I think it's smart and God forbid there's an emergency you can be there in no time.

I always prefer Sydnie to be as close by as possible Chat Icon

Re: day care - WWYD?

I would personally go with closer to work and the ILs...b/c if your little one get sick and needs to be picked up, you don't want to drive that far to pick them up, you'll want to be able to get to them quicker.

Re: day care - WWYD?

Honestly after a long day at daycare the last thing DS would tolerate is an hour and a half car ride. IMO it's better to have him still at daycare running around, having fun, than sitting in traffic with me.

Re: day care - WWYD?

Cons:

If you can work from home during the week, it would be too far to drop her off at daycare or if you need a 2 hour break to do things in the house.

What if you change work or they relocate?

Re: day care - WWYD?

I've gone through this debate as well. Reasons I'm looking close to work instead of home include:
her pediatrician is closer to work than home, if I get stuck at the office for any reason (which happens alot) I'd rather be 15 minutes away from daycare and not 45 minutes away from daycare and owe them O/T money b/c DD didn't get picked up promptly, closer to family & friends who could pick her up in an emergency if I couldn't, DH's office is 4 miles from mine, so it's just as easy for him as it is for my to pick her up.

Only reason I have to look close to home is that cost is less - for the SAME daycare center.

Re: day care - WWYD?

I chose close to home for Abby because we live very close to her doctors and affiliated hospitals. If G-d forbid Abby had a medical emergency and I had her in day care close to work, she could be taken to any one of Brooklyn's worst hospitals. We have enough people close to where we live who have full permission (after a phone call from either DH or myself) to take her from day care to be treated at either her doctor's office or a hospital.

we chose to have one close to home.

Less time for him to have to be in a car(dh handles car claims for a living, we like to keep our exposure down)...

I do agree with the other poster- if he's sick then he's also closer the pediatrician.. if baby was vomiting 10 minutes in a car is better than 30 i think...

Re: day care - WWYD?

i just chose a preschool closer to my job in lynbrook. best decision ever... they are there for shorter amount of time, and god forbid anything happened, i was literally one block away (one fence away if i wanted to climb the fence between my office parking lot and the school yard!)

i TOTALLY would do closer to your job, it feels so much better. You'll see....

I sent you an fm but I also vote for closer to home. My drive to daycare is about 7 minutes and sometimes my dd is cranky on the ride home. I cannot imagine if it were any longer.

Also, Suffolk county may be cheaper than Nassau. As for your dh's schedule, it is very hard to do. If he knows his schedule a month in advance, they may be able to work with you.

I have no choice since I work at the day care Jaidy attends. (about a 40 minute ride) For me a big big pro is the HOV lane. I get to work so much faster. Chat Icon

At my day care we have parents that have chosen both options. I really think it is a matter of personal preferenceChat Icon Good Luck Chat Icon

Tutor Time in Syosset

there's a Kiddie Academy in Syosset. Mason goes there and I love it. I went to the Tutor Time in Syosset and wasn't to happy with it for some reasons.
I chose a daycare by my work, but my commute is a half hour. Mason usually falls asleep on the way home or if he's up we play music and sing. Chat Icon
Love having him 5 mins from me at work. I get to see him if I need to.
