Re: Day trip to Fire Island

I've only been once, a couple years before Sandy, before DS was born, and JMO, I was not super impressed.

I went to the "Ocean Beach" section.

It seems to cater more to people that are staying there.

There was like one small bathroom with a couple stalls, NOT close to the beach. It was near where the ferry docked.

We basically walked around for awhile (not much to see, just vacation houses), went to the beach, went for a late lunch at one of the restaurants and then got back on the boat and went home.

I feel the same way about Montauk though.

I think these places purposely do that to keep visitors out.

Maybe others who go more frequently would have a different opinion though. I haven't been to the other sections.

Day trip to Fire Island

There isn't much to do! Ocean Beach has the most restaurants/stores. Ocean Bay Park has a few restaurants, Kismet has 2 restaurants. Davis Park has one.

Oh really? DH hates the beach so we wouldn't be going for that. I figured a few hours just to go. Guess we will think of a different place!

Oh, it's such an amazing place. If you like things that are laid-back and low key..it's perfect for you.

I would recc Ocean Beach for you and your family. It's very clean...family friendly....you can hit the beach (obviously), grab lunch....grab ice cream, walk around to the little stores. Even seeing the really cool beach houses is fun, if you're into that kinda thing. I love seeing how different they all are. Some are really simple...some are ornate.

I don't think I saw a park at Ocean Beach..but I could be wrong.

There are usually lemonade stands sometimes in the areas, too. Always a nice treat.

Overall, I think you would like it. Most do. Let me know how you like it, if you do go!

ps..........the ice cream shoppe is cash-only.

My DH hates the beach too and we were bored silly in Fire Island.
I'd pick someplace else!

We are very laid back. I was really only thinking a few hours, literally lunch and just walking around.

you can def. go for a few hours and get enough out of it. I always enjoy the ferry ride. I just find FI so peaceful and relaxing...I only wish I had went sooner!

Have fun if you go!

They also sell chocolate covered crickets at the ice cream place......but I don't recommend those. Chat Icon

Re: Day trip to Fire Island

If you only are planning to go for a few hours, you should be totally fine.

The ferry trip is fun if anything.

I think I was expecting something completely different though.

I also don't remember a lot of shopping. Maybe a place or two and I didn't buy anything because it was pricey if I recall. (I get it, not an easy place to get to).

You should look into going now before the season really starts. I remember the boat being really, really crowded and we left super early in the AM.

Have fun and let us know what you think!

Day trip to Fire Island

Try going to the Sunken Forest. It's a gorgeous walk and then you can have lunch at the marina.
